"Avery Pro Staff member David Rearick has teamed up with other conservation minded waterfowlers in his area, to combine resources and give back to the resource. Jason Fowler, Erik Nilsson, and Pro-Staffer David Rearick have started a fundraising event they call Pennsylvania Waterfowl Heritage Society. The ides is plain and simple, raise money and put it directly into the areas in PA that could most use it, for waterfowl production and migration stop overs.

“While there are many great organization out there that we each belong to and attend dinners etc, that are all about conserving the resource, you can’t expect them to concentrate enough money on every area in the US or Canada. Combine that with funding cutbacks at all levels of the spectrum, and many valuable areas at local refuges are going by the wayside. If we can start a trend and show people that they can get involved and give back to the specific area they hunt, the impact on the downward and neighboring flyways will see the difference.”

Utilizing their resources, the few starting members have come up with their first fundraiser, and it set to go off in a big way. With the grand prize of an Argentina Dove Hunt and many other great prizes including a monster waterfowl package including Avery, GHG, and ZINK gear, there are going to be some very local winners come October. The biggest winners is clearly going to be the birds, as the funding will be given to another PA organization, Wildlife For Everyone, where it will have an excellent chance to receive matching funds quickly doubling the amount being given to the first beneficiary.

“This year, the logical choice for us was the Pymatuning Refuge. It is close to home, a place we all frequent, and an area that is key for duck production for the entire East coast. Last year alone banding was done on over 1500 ducks on the refuge, so it obvious that is key for not only local but general duck production in the US. If anyone has a “Linesville PA” location on their banding certificate, this is where the money is going. Many of these birds not only head down the Atlantic Flyway; they also head to the Mississippi Flyway states like Ohio etc. Banding data has shown that this is a key area in PA for waterfowl, and we want to make it as good as possible for the future of the sport.”

While the contributions may be small, they key to the organization is that all the proceeds go directly to the resource. All overhead is being paid by the founders, in regards to ticket printing, websites, and etc. They feel it is a small thing they can do, to give back to the resource, and overall makes sure all the monies goes where it needs to. In the future they plan to concentrate on different areas of PA and beyond, and encourage everyone to donate or help out if they can.

“The idea behind our premise was every waterfowler wants to make a difference. I think everyone struggles with just how to do that. Doing this isn’t about building ones ego or patting ourselves on the back, it is simple about giving some time back to the sport we all value. While this event is the first of many and ticket prices are a little high, it is just a starting point. We just don’t have the bodies to sell 1000 tickets, when only a handful of guys currently are involved. Where we go from here is up to everyone in the waterfowling community, and we will do our best to make the most of it. It doesn’t just have to be in PA, this can be taken anywhere on an level, and that is what we are looking for. We encourage every waterfowler across the US and Canada, to give back one day of their time for rebuilding a dam, building nesting structure, helping out a WCO, etc.”

Congrats Guys!

David congrats on a great cause. Send me a PM about where I can send some money to help this out. I am sure some of your birds make it down to NC a time or two.
