THIS MESSAGE WAS JUST RECEIVED IN THE SOA OFFICE

Message from USDA sent to their CBP staff...

Effective immediately, September 27, 2007, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Veterinary Services (VS) is placing a temporary ban on the importation of poultry and commercial shipments of live birds, hatching eggs, and unprocessed (not fully cooked) avian products from the province of Saskatchewan in Canada, based on the diagnosis of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H7N3 confirmed in a commercial poultry operation.

Until additional epidemiological information becomes available to reduce the area of restriction, the ban will apply to the entire province of Saskatchewan.

All unprocessed (not fully cooked) avian products are prohibited from Canada unless accompanied by a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) certification that the product did not originate from the province of Saskatchewan or are accompanied by a VS import permit.

Fully-cooked avian products may enter in passenger baggage from Canada. Unprocessed (not fully-cooked) avian products from Canada will be not allowed in passenger baggage unless accompanied by a VS Import Permit or with proof that it did not originate from the province of Saskatchewan.

Fully cooked poultry meat, fully cooked meat products, fully cooked eggs and commercially pasteurized egg products are not affected by this ban and will be allowed entry.

Pet birds from Canada accompanied by documentation such as, but not limited to, a valid Canadian driver's license or passport showing proof of owner residence as being outside of the province of Saskatchewan will not be prohibited.

US-origin pet birds and performing birds will be allowed to return from the province of Saskatchewan under a VS import permit with a required 30 day quarantine in one of the three USDA Quarantine Centers.

Checked with the US Border crossing at Raymond, MT (406-895-2664) and they indicated that as of this afternoon (09/28/2007) if you brought birds to the US Border you had 2 choices, 1. return to Sask and find somebody that wanted them or 2. deposit the birds in black garage bags and throw them in the dumptser. They do not know how long the restriction will be in effect but said to call every few days to check the status.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has placed a temporary ban on the importation of all unprocessed (not fully cooked) avian products from Saskatchewan. This includes wild game birds taken by hunters. The USDA is advising American hunters returning home to dispose of their birds before attempting to cross the border.

The temporary ban is in reaction to Avian Influenza being discovered on a chicken farm near Regina, Saskatchewan. The strain of Avian Influenza discovered is not considered a threat to humans.
Saskatchewan Environment would like to remind hunters that it is an ethical hunting practice not to take any more animals and/or birds than they can appropriately utilize and to draw hunters' attention to the regulations concerning the wasting or abandoning of game.

you know this happened a couple years ago also in B.C. what a knee jerk reaction. The virus found is unharmfull to humans. i agree watch the import of farm poultry which is not alot from Sak.. So what next put a net at the boarder to stop the migration.
