i was just thinking about hunting (when do i stop) but i just remembered the last hunt i went on. We were hunting the pond and then these small birds with long ass beaks came flying in. There was like a flock of 10 just buzzing around the decoys wanting to land in them. We didnt shoot at them since we didnt know what they were but man were we tempted. Anyone have any idea what they were?

maybe snipe.. we should have shot then because i think the season for snipe is the same as our duck season. I never knew what a snipe was though. Is there only one type of snipe in my area, common snipe? or are there alot of different species of them? if so how do you identify them?

Might have been killdeer. Did they make high pitched calls like Te te te te te Real fast and what color are they. Killdeer are brown and white.

no i know what killdeer are. there were plenty that i would have loved to shoot there. they are so annoying lol. i couldnt tell what colour the birds were but im pretty sure they are snipe from looking at pics on google. If they were snipe, we are aloud 10 common snipe according to our regulations. We should have smoked em lol

could have been Rail. Hard to say without actually having a picture of what you were seeing.

Be real careful about shooting them thinking they are snipe. Usually snipe will only fly by them self or some times in pairs I have seen were they have been in a group of 3 but that is rare! They are usually by them self. If it was a group of 4 or more it sounds to me more like a shore bird of some kind! and they are protected! I would make sure you know what you are shooting at before you go shooting at them.

ya thats why we didnt shoot, not sure what they were. Ill figure out what they are next time. But im pretty sure they are snipe from the pics. They flew kind of fast right above the water but i cant remember if any landed in the water or not. I think they did but not too sure

Snipe do not fly in flocks. Be very careful about shooting shorebirds as most are illeagal to shoot and they all look pretty similar. A Wilsons snipe has a scrathing type call and they zig zag very erratic when they fly.

From what you described, I would say they are some kind of Sandpiper Shorbird.

Never heard of snipe trying to land in decoys. All the snipe here in Wisconsin stay on land.
