I am going hunting by my self friday morning and I am curious as to how i should set my spread. I have two doz hot buys, half doz woddies and four geese floaters, and two doz blue bills. I am hunting in central MN, and everyone that I talk to says that they are seeing puddlers mainly. How do I do my set-up? I will be pushing my boat into cattails. I think I am going to go with just my geese and puddler decoys. How should I set them up? I have never really been taught from anyone just tried and failed many times!!!

I think since you are a begginer you should go with the easiest spread, the j hook, its pretty simple really you just set your decoys in the shape of a j with the hook of the j facing into the wind since ducks land into the wind. If possible you always want to sit with the wind at your back, and I usually put the goose floaters at on end of the spread.

As was already stated the J or U is the simplest to set up. I would add a pair of Mallards in the kill hole making it look as if they just landed. If you want to set your divers up as well set them to the side of your puddler spread with a line of birds say 8 or so spaced about 4 to 6 feet apart, since you only have 2 dozen. Set that line strait out or hook it one way or the other, then at the upwind side of that line place the rest in a bundle or knot those divers if they work your spread will hit that end decoy follow it up and attempt to land just shy of the knot . The geese I would put either up wind of your entire spread or just to the outside of the puddlers opposite your divers.

Good Luck

How would you set up a small diver spread on a small farm pond that is uesd by divers?

If the pond is small enough...sit and wait! If you can kill a bird from across the entire thing...otherwise I personally would just put a few nearest to me, about 15 yards out...i guess i wouldnt put a ton of decoys out if it was a small farm pond, but thats just my idea

I agree, if the pond is small enough to shoot all the way across, I would hunt it the same as if I were hunting a creek. When I put out decoys in a creek I only put out about 4-6 decoys and a mojo.
