I was looking around and saw a really nice Charles Daly O/U sporting 12g. I know in all instances that a gun is a gun and it will kill, but is there a general rule or cons about using a sporting gun in the field?

Generally sporting guns have a longer barrel than the "field" models but really there is no difference. A longer barrel wont allow you to swing as fast as a 26" or 28" barrel but it will be more smooth of a swing. Your Charles Daly will do fine in the field especially if you are shooting cupped birds. But if you are shooting partridge, quail, or hunting in the woods for grouse you may want to look at a 28" or even better a 26" barrel.
