Tony, Read the latest Du mag. last night. The article on working dogs (guides dogs) obviously mentioned you and your dog. It stated that you hunted 160 days last year and do not guide for a living. If I may be so bold as to ask what do you do for a living to support yourself?

I'm pretty fortunate in with my work. I've got a commission only sales job. You can get a lot done on a cell phone!

I own my own company and employ commision only reps. How they would ever be in front of existing and potentially new business is beyond me if they are in the field 160 days/year. If you hunt that much you probably have 10-15 days racked up in additional travel time??

There is another secret to Tony's hunting opportunities; single and no kids that I am aware of.

Come on guys! What company hires someone who will be out of town hunting 200 days a year? Oh, the cell phone makes all the difference. Didn't I read somewhere that he sold insurance? My guess is if that is true, Dad owns the agency.

Guys,
It's certainly not common, and all of us joke about it wondering when Tony's life will take a turn. Will some woman actually anchor him, or will the owner of the agency sell to someone who cares more about seeing his salespeople in the office every day than he does about making money force a decision? Until then Tony remains that rare type of person who can maintain a constant focus on both business and hunting.
As someone mentioned, virtually every minute Tony has cell coverage and no birds are in range he's working the phone with his clients and prospects. He has good people in the office to handle paperwork, and he works for a boss (no relation at all) who is more concerned with the revenue Tony generates than his current physical location.
I also know that many days when I've hunted with Tony he's excused himself during the middle of the day when the rest of us are eating lunch, telling stories and relaxing to make the 45 minute drive to his office to handle some "detail work."
It's rare for the right person, the right boss and the right job to come together like it has for Tony, but that is in fact the case. After spending a good bit of time with him I can tell you that I couldn't even think of being able to do what he does. I (and not many folks I know) have the focus and drive required, but he does it.
Quick story. A couple of years ago when our Flyway Managers were in Memphis for a meeting Tony called saying he would like to come down to see the office and meet everyone. He had some meetings in St. Louis that left an afternoon open, and since it was about a 4 hour drive he wanted to come down. Obviously we all wanted to see him so he hit Memphis about 3:00 pm. He spent the afternoon with the group and spent the night at the deer camp. Everyone went to bed about 11:00. At 3:00 am a guy sleeping on a sofa in the den heard someone moving around, and he looked up to see Tony showered, dressed and taking his bag out the door. When asked what he was doing Tony replied that he was heading to St. Louis as his first meeting was at 8:00 that morning.
It really is as simple as Tony has stated.

Hate to say it guys, but like tony I have about the same situation. Seeing that I only waterfowl hunt, I work my tail off the rest of the year and then around the second week of september I rarely "see the office" as they say. That means working a lot of weekends and holidays, and yes a VERY SPECIAL wife that understands the passion I have for waterfowling. And my wife and her cousin get the girls trip to Florida in February to lay on the beech and fight the winter blues. It takes a lot of give and take not only at work but at home also. It can be done if you are willing to work at it! I know how lucky I am!!!!:)

Somebody sounds jealous! I've hunted with Tony for several years now and can vouch for Bill's statements, as most who hunt with him more than I do probably can to. You're taking some pretty cheap shots at a guy you've obviously never met.

Why is it your business how a man runs his life? You live your life the way you find it fit and pleasing and Tony can do the same. I think this whole thread is out of line and it could have ended after the initial response. With that being said congrats Tony on being able to be such a successful business man and an even more successful outdoorsman.

why do you give a rats ass how someone spends their time? what if a relative owned the business? how does that concern you? this is the probelm with people...they always have to worry about what everyone else is doing....keep pushing it and maybe, just maybe he will offer you to an all star wrestling match...just ask tyson how that ended up :D :p

Guys,
Please do not get into a argument over Tony's work arrangement. As long as you are not signing his paychecks, it is none of your or my concern. Tony is a great guy and a great hunter. He has worked very hard to get where he is at with Avery and in life. Everyone should be happy that we have such a dedicated and professional individual to represent Avery and the hunting community. Can we just let this discussion be?

Sounds like Tony gets it done. I don't care who runs the business that he works for. All i know is that it sounds like it is a jam up job.

I did see the DU article also, one question I do have is...... In the picture that he is casting the black lab, isn't that a misprinted picture? that sure looks like Clint Roby to me, not Tony V. Tony or Clint can you verify this? Come on spill the beans.
