Hey,

I was out hunting this past Saturday and ended up with a situation that has never happened to me before. So I'm curious to hear your thoughts and/or opinions.

We were set up in a corn field with approximately 5 dozen goose decoys spread out in the typical "C" shaped spreads. We surrounded our three layout blinds with 2 dozen full body mallard decoys and were set up about 100 yards down wind from a small bush lot.

The geese started flying around 8am. They didn't show up in small flocks of 5-10 which I am used to seeing in that area, but they showed up all at once by the hundreds.

The geese worked well to flagging and calling (which at times was useless as there were SO many birds in the air), but the birds were extremely shy of the decoys.

At first, I thought the landing hole was a bit too small so we widened it. Same result. Then we thought we were a bit too close to the bush lot, so we left the majority of the dekes where they were and repositioned another 100 yards down wind and took some dekes with us. The birds worked a bit better, but for the most part reacted the same.

The strange this is that these birds kept circling and circling, but would not close the 50 yard gap, or lock right into a clean finish. All those birds in the air at once made for an exciting yet frustrating hunt. Next time I think I will leave the duck decoys at home, set up well away from the bush lot and dig the layout blinds in for a lower profile. Any other suggestions on how to make my next hunt in that field more succesful?

I agree, leave the duck decoys at home and try that, or you might even try downsizing your goose spread. I had a situation similar to that last year, we had out about 4 dozen honkers, and the birds were coming in big flocks aswell they didnt finish either. The next day we downsized our spread to about 2.5 dozen and we got our 5 guy limit. I dont know if the geese shy away from bigger spreads because its intimidating or what, but I do know that bigger spreads earlier in the migration dont work as well as they do late in the migration. Hope this helps

Sounds like there were alot of eye balls looking at you at once instead of just small groups of 5-10 birds like you said you were used too. Lots of eyes, usually find something weird. Maybe it was just bad luck that day.

I don't know what a Bush Lot is, but I don't have good luck drawing larger groups of birds into areas that are tight or have lots of trees around them. If I do have to hunt a spot like that, I downsize my spread considerably and hope to peck away at smaller groups.

I don't see the ducks as a problem so much as the situation.

Just my first thoughts.

Hey,

Well the second outing in that field went a lot better. We had them cupped and commited and we managed a three man limit. Thanks again for all those who replied.

You are welcome for the help, and what did you guys do different this time.

Well for starters, we set up well away from the bush lot. We were on a high point close to the middle of the field. We arrived plenty early to dig in the blinds quite a bit.
We also set the dekes up in a tighter pattern, in a slightly curved fashion. The birds responded well to calling and the flagging sealed the deal.
I think this field has a few more shoots left in it but we are going to let it settle for a few days.

Looks like it payed off, did you guys downsize at all or did you just tighten them up

We had approximately the same amount of goose decoys out, but we left the duck dekes at home this time and it seemed to have worked.
This field is now covered in about 6 inches of snow. We're keeping an eye on it to see how the birds react.

Yeah, I dont know about you but where Im from in Kansas the big spreads of full body mallards dont work until late in the season when all the ducks are coming in huge flocks, but we kill our fair share of mallards. Anyway good luck on the rest of the season and keep posting pics
