View Full Version : great morning in NH

let me preface this with the fact that i have never seen a pintail in the wild before today. The morning started out like any other, a slippery boat ramp, a short boat ride to our spot, rain and cold weather. A few passing flocks wanted nothing to do with our spread of decoys and quickly headed to "safe water" ( a 1/2 mile zone of river closed to hunting, due to a state rep that has a house on the river, and doesnt like shooting behind his house.) Saw a flock in the distance, gave them a few quacks (i thought they were mallards in the low light) they instantly locked and headed straight for the decoys, at 10 yards (or less) i called the shot. When i pulled up on the flock i saw several sprigs on the tails of the ducks. My heart instantly froze as i squeezed off the first shot, i whiffed in a bad way. I made my second shot count and dumped my first Bull Sprig. my hunting buddy also dropped a nice large bull sprig. it was a morning to remember to say the least. we also shot a black mallard hybrid, and a bluebill hen, though none could top the pintails that we bagged! this one is going on the wall seeing as though it is a once in a life time duck for us NH boys!

Man I'm jealous. I have only seen 5 of them in the wild and I got my 1st shot at one monday. I completely wiffed twice. I still can't belive it. Just some bad luck my gun had broke and my friend went to work leaving me his gun with a full choke, but anyways my fault and great looking sprig you got there CONGRATS
P.S. please tell me he's going on the wall:eek:

Thats a real pretty Sprig! We had our shots earlier this year and blew it on a flock of 20 er so thought we'd never see them again. We let the spot alone for a week and went back the next saturday and shot 4 of them. Man you should have seen the smiles, just as big as yours if not bigger! We actually saw quite a few this year and this was also my first year seeing them in the wild. There a real treat thats for sure, mines also going on the wall!

What a beautiful trophy! We see quite a few Pintails in the fall but they rarely have a measurable sprig.
Congrats.
