Son got his first woodie!!

J.T. got his first woodie this morning. We got to THE SPOT a little late and the ducks were already there.

They jumped out and left. He looks at me and says dad I think the woodies are gone. I told him then we would shoot a black duck.

So we are sitting there and this black duck lands right in front of J.T.
he goes to get his gun up and it flies off. So we sit there a little longer and we see 5or6 woodies swimming to us then 5or6 more then 5or6 more. I counted about 15 to 20 woodies and then I noticed about 10 to 15 ring necks. I have never shot a ring neck.

It was so hard to let the little guy shoot knowing that by the time I get my gun up I would not be able to get a shot.

So he picks one out and says ok dad and I wave my hand and with a whoosh they get up, he pulls the trigger and splash down comes a woodie. He looks at me and says why didn't you shoot I told it was his hunt I was just there to watch him hunt.

He tells me it's ok dad, can you get my duck.

So here he is with his first woodie.

How old is he? You have to be 12 to hunt hear in RI.

He is 7. This was his frist woodie he got his first duck last year it was a nice big black duck.

Here you can take your child hunting when you think they are ready. Just have to be reasonable about it. I am a firearms instructor and take him shooting just about every weekend. He is firing better than some of the officers I train to shoot.

my 7 year old has made me promise him that I'd mount his first duck. I'd love for it to be a wood duck. Hell, I've never killed a wood duck. It will more than likely be a Bufflehead. There are thousands of those around here. A whole lot more than last year. Congrats to you and your son. I'm sure you were as proud as he was happy.
