View Full Version : 'Mudding' w/ Spray Paint

I just have replaced my ill- fated Finisher with a new one.

Eager to hunt, I have sprayed a pretty good coat of camo brown all over the blind. I did this with last one, and then mudded it.

Can I get by with just the paint? will it kill the 'new' sheen?

All opinions considered-thanks.

I have painted three Finisher Blinds ( Grass Green... ) and I can assure you that paint and a bit of local foliage - works a treat.
If you are mostly hunting corn or wheat, then using a flat water based paint in that camo will hide you well. If you need pics... let me know. Good luck.

You can get by with just paint. You want to make sure and use the same color of paint as the dirt you are hunting in. Up here khaki with a little charcoal color mixed in seems to work the best.

Flat black or flat brown is all I use now. Mudding works great but only lasts so long. The paint is more versitlie, you can change the base color any time you need to match a different terrain.

Krylon camo olive drab is all you need. it kils the shine permantly

You can definitely get by with just the paint. That is what I have done in the past and the the shine will be gone for good.

Why doesn't Avery use a material that doesn't shine, or alternatively hit the blinds with a coat of paint? It annoys me that out of the box there is a shine that needs attention.

Its the fabric maker that has the shine. To have Avery paint them it would cost us extra $$. And The choice of color of paint. Its not rocket science to do yourself.

Then use a different fabric. Of course it is not rocket science, any moron can yield a spray bomb. I just don't think that after I shell out good $ for a blind I should have to do stuff to it to make it field-ready. These blinds cost enough that they should be good to go out of the box.

you dont HAVE to mud or spray your blind. You can just try to lay in the field with it, but dont complain if birds flare from it. Thats why you mud a blind or spray it, to match the field you are hunting. It would be hard for them to spray it for you since people use their blinds in different terrain, so its up to you to do what you want.

They are ready to hunt out of the box. It comes down to what type of hunter are you. Do you go the extra mile to increase your success or do you just go out and do as little as possible to increase your success? Not every field situation demands the same base color on the blinds. Bottom line, do what ever you want or feel is right. Me, I will paint mine because I like to see the fear in the birds eyes when I flip the lid and they are 5-10 yards from death.:D

It seems like many of the blinds I see on the videos (zink and rnt) don't look very mudded. Do these guys mud once then the original camo pattern come back through, or do they just not mud at all?

I am curious.

If the mudding or painting is too much work for a person then it is probably too much work to set out a whole spread and put the time into scouting and finding permission. I dont mind mudding my blind at all. That is why I don't paint it... I can do it as many times as I want to or just do it that morning in the field if it needs more. Painting does work great too though!

I started painting blinds this year and will never go back to Mudd. If need be i can change the background color is minutes. Then to top it off, i put killerweed on all my blinds and now, it takes just a couple of mins to stubble up with the natural terrain where we are hunting. I couldnt imagine having to mudd ever again.

And for those lazy people complainging about factory ready blinds, they are, but attention to Detail is what separtes great hunters from good hunters.

Just my 2 cents.

If painting is so effective, should I save money by buying a layout blind in Khaki color?

It depends on your fields you hunt. I totally covered mine with KW if I want to change color I just camo paint the KW. all of our corn fields are cow corn and there is nothing but short stalks. I just fluff up KW then paint. Then fluff it up again so it doesnt stick together.I paid for camo but could have got Khaki

Koondog,
IMO absolutely... No reason for fancy camo you never use. Paint your blind put on the Raphia or Killerweed and get the paint out. Not one of my blinds look like they did 1 day after i bought them.

I agree, buy the khaki. You will paint or mud right over the camo and probably never see it again!

I'll third buying a Khaki blind. It is the only way to go. I paint mine with textured spray paint. It turns out very nice.

IMO it's just like buying a baseball glove - you can buy a cheap one or you can buy a $150-$225 baseball glove (I bought plenty from high school to Div-1 college) and some people go the extra mile and really break it in and make it a worn in before the first pitch of the season is even thrown. You can oil it, bake it, play catch with weighted baseballs, all kinds of crazy things but it just boils down to what kind of player are you - "just enough" or "whatever it takes"? I understand they are making some "prebroke in" gloves but its just not the same. Just go the extra mile and you won't be dissappointed - I do know what you mean, the 8 guys that hunt with me complained about mudding and then painting until i put them side by side to see the difference. FYI - I used a textured spray paint - brown and tan - looks awesome kinda like a natural gear blind but darker - we hunt a lot of tilled corn and even bare dirt sometimes. It works when you can put 3 or 4 pieces of corn stalk on 5 blinds and have 15 birds on the ground at 20 yds and 30+ coming right in. it's worth it...trust me.

Make no mistake about it I mud my blinds, and I don't 1/2 arse it when it comes to hunting. As I understand it, the point of mudding/painting is not necessarily to get a better hide, but to dull the sheen of the blind material. My suggestion for improvement is that it would be nice if that sheen was not there to begin with. A couple analogies might be--When I go to buy a new vehicle I expect there to be air in the tires or When I buy a new call I expect it to be tuned, if I want to adjust it I will, but at least send it to me ready to go.

Buck,
How can u compare a blind to a CAR ? BTW, the blinds will work out of the box just like your truck...... Why do some guys dress up with fancy rims, tires, and a stereo DVD ? most of these guys never use that 4 wheel drive to tow there trailer into the field...... PAINT it and FORGET it, its very simple... Good luck, and dont take offense i dont think anyone was calling you lazy, it was just some fact that some of us observe.

Good Luck !

I thought that the car or at the very least the call analogy was at least alot better than the baseball glove one. Merely a suggestion for improvement...ah, forget it.

I changed my mind, I now think that Avery should sell spray cans for blinds.
