Recently a friend brought it to my attention that he believes that the new box of Black Duck Floaters he bought from my shop were different then the last one he had bought from me. Different how -I said. The feather groups are not outlined -the decoy is all Umber . Im sure the other ones were to I said before they got some use. That because the feather edges are raised paint must have rubbed off exposing the lighter color. No he said and sent me a pic of new ones(last year) used once all with the distinct coloring. He also stated that he likes the old ones better as they stand out more.
Heres the old ones

Mine look like the one in your second pic Ed.
I actually like the darker style. I use to paint up mine like in the first pic...but seemed to spook more blacks. Now thats when I lived back in NewBrunswick Canada.

Hey Ed and Rob,
I much prefer the old style..........I know we discussed this before Rob!
We shoot a pile of blacks over here on PEI and if you stand back 100yds and look there is quite a difference.
We also see a big difference finishing blacks.......especially late season ducks!
Just my two cents.

I love the 'old' style......they were one of my favorite blocks we've ever made. But what do I know.

I'm sure the answer you will get is due to more viz from the air......you know, over there in the Mississippi Flyway where all the blacks are.
I disagree. I'll take more realism on the water.
Could you imagine the old paint scheme on FB Blacks??? Hmm,hmm, hmm.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Paul..............FB's done the old way would just be awesome!
We shoots hundreds a year and used to hand paint G&H decoys. No more!
We noticed a huge difference in the birds decoying and turning birds on big open water.Plus now with the sleppers and nohead feeders.........I ma warming up the Dremel.
A good friend even took a Dremel Tool and detailed all the new ones to look like the old ones.
We should start lobbying for the old ones!

Judging by the birds hanging around Chezzs neck they either had to be color blind on not from New Brunswick:rolleyes: - Just funnin ya-LOL

Another Vote for the "old " ones!
50 bucks for a half dozen, and they look cheaper than ever before.......????
Seriously , why change such a great looking decoy???

I prefer the old ones. This fall I opened a box of "new ones".... well with in week or two (while using a 12 slot decoy bag) the paint was coming off!! I was not impressed in the least & those 6 dekes pretty much spent the rest of the season on the shelf. My originals are still in great condition & what's even stranger is my good friend bought 12 last fall & he puts them in a regular old decoy bag & the paint has stayed on???? Any suggestions??? It might sound like I'm bashing Avery, but I'm not.... I have a large amount of Avery product from teal to Golden-eyes & back again and have had no problems! I do think that Avery decoys are above any on the market, just giving my two cents worth.

Hey Paul...yes we did have this discussion before...and I was right eh!!!...I'm just poking fun. The difference between my decoys that I hand painted and the older style is...the GHG old style are darker, mine we a dark chocolate brown......and I agree.....if I had well, either or the newer style/ color....I'm pretty sure I could have bagged more late season blacks.
Personally...I really like both.

It boils down to different tastes and opinions. I watch the ducks on my friends impoundment and the blacks look identical on the water at a 100 yards.

Hey Wayne............I agree..whether it is 100yds or 1000 yds they stand out and plain and simple turn ducks. It is finishing highly pressured blacks that I am concerned with and the old ones are better in my opinion.
I guess I ma still not sure why the change.
PEI DUCK GUY............I had bought soem news one too and had the same problem.........I returned them and asked the CS at Cabelas to litterally check the boxes and got the old ones.
The I think the paint issues happened with the transition from old to new.......the newer ones are supposed to be made with black plastic so even if there are chips or wear it would not show up or be easily repair or touched up!
I think some got out made with the lighter plastic?????????
That is what I was told anyway.........anybody help us out????

Guys,
I just receive a reply from Fred about the change.
He said, "We changed the paint scheme in 2006 to make these decoys look better and more realistic on the water. The 2005 decoys were painted and then wiped to expose the feather edges, this really looked good in hand but made the decoy look to light on the water so we darkened the decoys by using darker paint and not wiping the feather edges. We think they are more effective and more realistic decoys."
Thanks,

This is why I got away from the highlites on the feather tips.......it looked so much better, with the solid color.
