It was pretty dark when I took the photo, but you get the point. I have a tough time deciding whether this mallard was especially huge, or if the goose was incredibly small.....THOUGHTS??

GTG,
I would say one of those off breed canada's the guys on the west coast
talk about like the aleutian or something. My friend Joe got one last week
that couldnt have been more than 3-4 lbs tops.
Either way, GOOD JERKY Eats in my book.
Keep hammering.

Gotta love the Cacklers. I dont think thats an Aluteuian because it does not have a white ring on the neck. Here are a couple Cacks I shot.

I'd say that it's a big mallard AND a small goose.;)

here in Washington we get Cacklers,Aleutions, duskys,Taverners, lessers for smaller geese but the breast looks too light to be a cackler.where was he bird shot? heres a pic of a comparison shot of a mallard a lesser and and an exceptionally big honker for this area.

My brother used to have big and small goose contest at his shop in MN. If your goose was not under 2 lbs, it wasn't going to win. Largest was usually between 13 and 15 pounds. Gotta love those Giants!

Being from CO, I'm sure it is a hutchison goose. Hutchies are the next size up from Cacks and are found on the Miss and Central Flyways where cacklers are not. Many people say they shoot cacks all around the country but they're usally mistaken. Cacklers are only found on the west coast, they nest in Alaska and the west coast of Canada then winter in from WA to Central CA and are rarely shot any father east than Utah, though it does happen chances are its a hutchison. Aluteuians normally have a white ring like outforblood said, now I'm not sure but I thought Aluteuians where a type of cackler. Someone chime in if I'm wrong but I think there are 7 types of Cacks like tanners and duskys? Not sure but its probably a Hutchison, where did you kill it exactly?

i know there are richardsons, aleutians, cacklers, duskys, taverners, and probably a few other different races that would compare to that size, over here on the east coast a few years back my dad shot one that was about that size, infact i think Mr. Jepson might have the picture of it but it looked almost exactly like that, pretty hard to tell though, i would say its either a richardsons or a cackler, yeah, they are a west coast race, but weird stuff happens occasionally just like the guy on here from PA killing a ross goose, some weird stuff but you know i could be wrong, it could be another race, either way i think it would be just as tasty as a 15 pounder:D

Your right about strange things like that happening, my father shot a mallard in Va that was banded in Alaska but like I said chances are it is a Huchtie or Richardson.
But hey if it is a cack in CO thats really cool.

On the 'lighter' side of things, Ross's can be just as small. Check this guy out as compared to a mixed bag o' ducks.

We shoot quite a few of those little guys in Texas !! We always sit around & laugh about the size compared to the ducks !
