No where else to post this so i figured id post it here since this room gets so many views.....im looking to plant some trees along the lines of leland cyprus or any other fast gorwing boundary tree, around the edge of my pond that is close to the road. Long story short, i dont feel like spending a grand on some trees, does anyone know of a conversation society or anything like that, that will plant trees for free or a low price as habitat enhancement?

Contact your local extension office and they will be able to fill you in on any programs your state may have.

Maybe things will be different where you are at, but, a friend contacted the MDNR about this very thing and they recommended not only NOT planting trees, but removing the ones that were there. The logic was that birds of prey would not have a place to roost to look for easy targets like baby ducks.
Just a thought.

Well i understand waht your saying but a hawk would never roost in a leland cyprus tree and i need to block the pond from the road so that ducks and geese feel more comfortable going into it in the first place

Ducks do different things all across the Flyways. The same ducks that pile into flooded timber down south won't give you the time of day if your hunting a wooded pond in my neck of the woods.
If you do have success hunting ducks in heavily timbered areas, I would suggest contacting a state forestry representative. Then contacting your local NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) office. Some states have funds availble for habitat plantings. There are some species of grasses that may give you the same effect as well. We have several species of Switch Grass around here that will grow to 8 to 9 feet tall and provide a very thick visual and sound buffer. Just check with NRCS to make sure that the species will be suited to your site.
