This past weekend, I visited my grandparents on Mount Desert Island, Maine. I drove up from school Friday Night and we were expecting a snow storm on Saturday.

During the day, I went out in search of ducks. There is a local pond that is usually kept partially open by swiftly moving water. This small mill pond then spills over into Somes Sound which eventually empties into the Atlantic.

With winds whipping large wet flakes that clung to my face on impact, I raised my canon to my eye and took the following pictures.

A pair of Blacks:

The Reason they stick around (look closely at the guy):

Afterwards, he went and checked his mail. I met him and asked if I could go down his driveway to get close ups. He was extremely nice and permitted me to go right to them. When he exits his vehicle, the ducks run to him. It was an amazing site. Although it is illegal to feed the ducks, he said he didn't care. He is an older gentleman and it brings a smile to his face.

The man and his ducks:

It often looks that way, but it is a Mallard / Black cross. We see alot of them in Maine where Mallard numbers are increasing and pushing into traditional Black Duck areas. They get that cool swoosh of green across the head like the Wideon have.

Great pics Josh.

Nice work with the camera. It takes a ton of practice to catch ducks and geese with a camera and make the viewer feel like he or she is there. Please keep them coming.
