Calling All Kids
By Avery Pro-Staffer Terry Shields
When most kids think of a typical day at school they envision endless math problems topped with grammar and history lessons. Today’s lesson was a little different at the Franklin School in Midland Michigan. On this day the hallways were filled with the sounds of pure duck, well at least our best attempt at it. Today I had the pleasure of working with a great group of kids from Mr. Chambers Science class.

The kids started out the semester learning about wildlife and ecosystems from the textbook, and eventually moved on to the marsh where they constructed Wood Duck boxes and witnessed nature first hand. All this culminated in a visit from me with duck calls in hand. After introductions and a complete tutorial of the parts and operation of the calls we got down to business. Being a conductor of energetic youth armed with duck calls is a challenge to say the least, but after a few minutes and some quick pointers they actually started to sound pretty good.

Most of these kids were not familiar with the tradition of waterfowl hunting so questions about waterfowl and the nature of hunting in general were plenty. I talked quite a bit about calling ducks, decoys and also ethics in the out of doors. This class is one of many in my area that explore the great things the outdoors has to offer.
