Well I got tired of waiting for the season to get here so I started on my layout boat.
I noticed that the birds were flaring from me last year so I decided to get even.
They won't know what hit'm.

gh92 that is the plan. I think this will get me low and hidden enough that I can finally use my open choke tube.

whatever, your choice. just wear some good camo and a facemask. i know that i would personally fill it up with vegetation of some sort. but its your boat!;) :D

I allways add natural vegetation to my camo. It just seems to work a little better.

yeah i know what you're saying about the killerweed taking a long time. it tooks us FOREVER to grass up our layout blinds. the boat looks great! i expect to see some pics of dead ducks piled up on it this season!:D

A question not meant to sound like a smart a** but wont paddling with that thing be a little hard with those doors open like that, from what I can see it looks like if you were centered in that boat on your knees trying to paddle it would be a far reach from side to side and not much progress would be made, not to mention if your hunting thicker vegitation. Im not sure maybe your spots its shallow enough to just walk in front of it and then get in it, but would it be tough to paddle like I believe it would be if you had to paddle out to your spot?

It is not that much of reach. If the water gets to muddy to walk in or to shallow to paddle in I just stand up and push poll.
I use a long kayak paddle so getting were I need to go is not to bad.
The blind I had on it last year was so bad I could not paddle any were fast.
Even if getting there will be slow at lest I won't be seen when I get there and I can take my time and enjoy the fruits of labor on the way back right.

A hinge location that is halfway between the center line and edge of the boat will solve that issue. The door would be smaller too.

Grant if you can show me how to do this I would try it.

I will try to come up with something in the next couple of days. I know from personal experience that when you hit overhanging doors with your paddle, it stops you dead. I have to redo the doors on my boat for that reason. Still on my to do list this summer. Maybe I can sketch something up and pm it to you.

Cool thanks. I know that every one has ideas so if we all can work together and share we can get what works for all of us.

Here's what I mean. You place the hinge farther inboard so that the door will be short and when it pivots, it won't overhang the water. Your puddler might be a bit trickier than my marsh rat, since the puddler tapers quickly fore and aft. The foot area should be easy enough, but the head area could take some tinkering. Although if you totally conceal the opening, it could still be simple enough. I sketched out 1/4 width of the boat for the hinge location, but it might have to be a bit farther inboard to account for the thickness of the door frames.
Since the door frames don't start at the edge of cockpit, you will need to attach the edge of the cover to the sides of the cockpit.

I saw this on the Refuge. This is what I had in mind. I would make the center lower though.

Here are the doors grassed up and ready for action. Put a little more grass on the boat too.
