Have not posted for a while as a virus ate up my computer! Although a little poorer I now have a new computer and thought I better share a few pics from hunts last week.

Last Wednesday we made the call at 4.30am that it was on for a goose hunt We were targeting a flock that had been given a fair hammering this season and they had smarted up some and had a couple of victories over us on recent hunts. We wanted to have everything in our favour so dug deep into our bag of tricks to make sure we did it right!

It was a really windy day with heavy rain at times so the GHG FFD dekes were worth there weight ingold once again...NO SHINE WHEN WET!!!!
http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/1503/aaaaspreadjulyaq5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The end result was a hunt that Shane and I will remenber for a long time. July is a difficult month to hunt geese here in NZ and our bag of 114 giant honkers between the two of us was a really good morning Hunt!!!
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/3869/aaabagjulyjs8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

All that was left was to load them up and go do all the breasting
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/4319/aaaatruckjulynk3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The next day there was a big spring tide and also a good westerly windforecast. So my mate Murray took the day of work so we could go for a tidal water duck hunt, I had a heap of gear to dry and pack away from the goose hunt the previous day so we did not head out to hunt till 11 am, the wind picked up which made the tide even higher than normal. water does not normally get anywhere near the floor of our blind
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/702/aaatidejulysm2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

But the hunting was surpreme big water Mallard decoying over my Oversize GHG Mallards and black duck dekes with limits of 30 Mallards by 2.30pm for Murray and I!
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/5728/aaaaestjulyvn7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Once again a big mess of fat southern NZ Mallards to go home and clean.

Knowing you as I do. I am not sure you have ANY bad hunts. I think the NZ birds just give up when they know you are hunting. They must draw straws to see who has to go into the spread so you get your limit and go home.

No limit on geese and hunt for 11 months, our Mallard limit is 20 for opening and 15 for the rest of the 3 month season

Chad, I am no expert on the call but find that less is more at this time of year! I hardly blew the call on this last goose hunt and they worked the dekes something that you would have to see to believe!!!

Paul, how many geese do you have using the area, and specifically using the field that you are targeting to kill such a large number of birds?

Awsome hunts and photos. What kind of bird numbers do you guys have to be able to shoot that many birds a day and not destroy the population. That would be absolutely amazeing. What do non-residence have to do to hunt there.

There is no risk over over harvest of geese in NZ at this stage. Unfortunatley not enough are shot so culls are undertaken with 1000s being shot from helicopters each year. Non residents just have to buy a licence like the rest of us kiwis, but be warned our resident geese can at times be very hard to hunt and local knowledge and contacts are all important!

Nice pile of geese, looks like your doing your best to"cull out" a fair share of the population!
Curious though on how they eradicate birds from a helicopter?
