Anyone else apply for the SD nonresident waterfowl liscence?
My group of 4 were successful for the 3 day OOY liscence. Next year we will probably do the statewide 10 day!

First year in many that I will not be hunting waterfowl in SD, very disappointed, guess I'll just hit some other states and shoot some roosters with my friends in SD

Did you apply and not get drawn in or just didnt apply?
Have you had good success when you've hunted up there?

One of our guys has permission for cropland bordering a lake around Aberdeen and then we were planning to scout around Webster.
The tentative date to hunt is the last weekend in October. Is there usually quite a few northern birds down by then?

I just typed up a lengthy reply on dates and places and realized it was way more detailed than I wanted it to be on a public forum, shoot me a PM and I'll try and answer some questions and fill you in with what I've learned with my time out there. I've never been out there that early but I know guys that go early and do OK but not a lot of migrators, ducks or geese for that matter. Shoot me a PM if I can help ya out

Goose it's $75.00 for a 3 day permit in selected counties and $110 for a 10 day statewide license. I think it will be worth it. Duck hunting in the morning and pheasant hunting in the afternoon,,, life is good!:D

Hope you have a good time, my advice to you is to not stay too close to Webster. There is some of the best waterfowling in the country there but its no secret and the place is usually packed. Now if you are only hunting water then it really isn't an issue but getting permission on field ducks up there can be tough.

Connor is right on. The Webster area is hard to get permission for field hunting, but it can be done. Water hunting is easier, some of the water is larger in size. Some of the water will require a larger boat. Hotel space can be a problem depending on your timing. There are alot of hunters and in that area. If this is the first year you are going there then expect some set backs and use the time to learn the area and find some contacts. Early November is probably a better time depending on the weather.

There are usually plenty of birds around by that time. Usually the migrators begin to trickle in around pheasant opener on a normal year. Pheasant opener is always the 3rd week in october. The webster area always loads up with birds and i guess for me getting permission has never really been a problem. Seems like as long as you are nice and respectable most guys will let you hunt. Last year for the early goose opener we did have some trouble getting permission but that was only because everyone and their whole family wanted to hunt the same area and it seemed we were always getting beat to the door. Just travel a little distance off the main roads and you can find plenty of lightly pressured birds.

I think it will be worth the price, being able to duck hunt and pheasant hunt will be a lot of fun! So you think the hotels around that area will be pretty full? Should we make reservations?

Make reservations for sure unless you plan on commuting like I mentioned in the PM. Unless I missed something when I was there the webster area sure doesn't see pressure like a few other parts of the state I frequent.

Yes we felt pretty lucky to have both of our groups one of six and the other of two draw out. Heading over to Oak Tree Lodge for eleven days to film a segment of Fold Em 3, should be an all around great time.

Going this year again. Mid/late October can be hit or miss depending on the weather and migration. It's SD, it will be good regardless. Mid November could be better but more of a risk of freezing out.
