View Full Version : if you were to have only 6doz dekes, what would they be?

here's my lastest ponder. I"ve desided to put together a 6doz spread. i will keep 3-4doz in their own 12 slot bag to keep looking good cause they would be my main dekes. and the remaining 2-3 doz would be fillers to the spread and all kept in a bag together.
so now i need to pick the species and the style. I'm thinking oversized mallards for the 3-4 doz main decoys and maybe the cheap hot buy mallards as the fillers since i won't care about them getting beat up.
but i don't know if i want a 100% mallard spread. (although i think thats really all you need).
so what's your opinion?

Buy 6 pintails or widgeon to give your spread a little color.
IMO, it's almost (depending on your hunting scenario) ALWAYS a good idea to mix some honkers in with your duck spread. Ducks eat those goose floaters up!

toss in some woodies too...
could also get some floating sleepers or headless feeders...
take some field decoys and PVC or conduit tubing push it in just about water level and slide the motion stake in there, mixing the floaters and field deks

I wouldnt waste time with gadwall or teal. Teal will come into just about anything and gadwall in a decoy spread does nothing for you. Especially up here where teal are only brown

yeah i don't like gadwall decoys. they look to much like your average hen decoy. I'd rather have black ducks or something with alot of eye catching color.
as far as teal, there's no teal around when my season opens (thanksgiving day).

i would say some over size black ducks because ducks can see those over size decoys farther away and plus that black really stands out and i would add some pintails and goose floaters to

I would toss in some sleeper mallards for sure, I run between one and two dozen and also have some butt up sleepers and some no head feeders through the mix. You're Pintails are also always a good addition and I always try to have some widgeons in there, at least a dozen for where I hunt. Does really really well for around here.

Unless you are hunting in 12 inches of water or less there is no reason to run but up feeders. Butt ups in 15 feet of water is not natural.
Gadwalls don't stand out compared to black ducks? Both of them are brown.
If it were me I would buy divers but if you want a puddle duck spread I would go 4 dozen oversize mallards, 1/2 dozen oversize Sprig, 1/2 dozen oversize blacks and 1 dozen coots.
6 dozen is awefully big for a puddle duck spread.

That is only 3 different poses... sleeper, headless feeder, and butt.
I put the blackducks in for the visibility.

6 doz big? i guess it depends where you're hunting. how many do you typicaly use? sounds like a good question for another thread.
