Double Banded

2 federal bands, different sequences and type. Mike Bard and Erik Nilsson doubled up on him and got to split the pair... Anyone have any thoughts other than a potential band retention study?

Unfortunately for me, I wasn't in on this bird. Two of my best buds tagged teamed it and were nmore than happy to walk out of there with a band and a good memory... The "shot" adds character IMO.

I had this happen to me with a honker two years back. That bird was banded and caught in a different banding project so they put a different band on him for whatever reason.

Never seen any bird double banded with regular bands.........Every one I have seen is just a single band or a double with one of them being a reward..........:)

i've shot a double banded mallard but one was a green reward. But i won't complain about a 100 reward. lol Don't they just normally record the data about the brid and use the band thats already on the bird.

heres what happened,
the bird was banded earlier with one band. (in the pic, the band on the left side), then the bird was retrapped and instead of taking the band that was already on there they just left the old band on and put a newer style band on the bird. (the band on the right) ive seen a few like this but have never been able to harvest anything but a single one. its pretty awesome to get both. most of the time when a bird is retrapped like that they take the band(if it is worn badly) off and one of the guys that bands gets it and they reband it. every once in awhile if they get a band that isnt very worn and all the numbers are visible they leave the old band on as a lil pick-me-up.:D

Both Erik and I called in the bands and there was currently no info available on either. Makes me think they are newly added. The bands appeared to be of different metals, so as Dave said, it could be some kind of retention or durability study for the band materials used.

We hammered that bird... there really wasn't any part of it that didn't have BB holes in it... he came in close presenting about a 15 yard shot between the two of us and we both shot hitting it hard.

sweet job on the bands. ya i just shot a double banded drake ringneck in northern minnesota and it had a reward for $100 dollars. so that was a major bonus that will help pay for shells

thats very impressive. up here in NW washiongton, its super super rare to get a band. my dads guided for upwards of 17 years, and hes got 3. id love to get one too :D
