I use goose decoys to kill ducks. Saturday the ducks paid no attention to the duck floaters, dumped right into the geese. Fields, we don't put duck decoys out, goose fullbodies do the trick fantastically.

We seldom use more than 3-4 dz dekes for ducks with the exception of some big water hunting here in SD. At home in VA we do some big tidal river hunting but putting out 10 dz duck decoys doesn't make much sense considering it does look very natural in an area where there aren't many ducks. Now divers are the exception for us.
Try to imulate what you are hunting

Our big river spread when we have the permanent floater out is somewhere around 10 dozen duck plus 7 or 8 dozen goose floaters plus about 5 dozen full body geese plus 2 dozen full body ducks.
Crap no wonder it seems to take us forever to set-up.

it really depends on where or what im trying to kill
if im shootin ducks in a pond, 3 or 4 doz
if its in a field, every single field decoy i own, bigger the spread the better
roughly 7 to 8 doz
if im shooting snows, its the same for field ducks, bigger the better
we normally set out a spread ranging from 500 to 3000 it just depends
hunting is so much a numbers game now a days, numbers, and motion

earlier in the season when flocks are smaller I typically use about a dozen mallards, and then teal and shoveler hens. Later in the season I will use all of my wigeons and mallards which totals about 3 1/2 dozen

we dont use to many because the spot we hunt it seems is always the spot that the ducks wunna b in so we only use like 3 or 4 doz and about one dozen goose floaters but for geese i use as many decoys as i can git out in the field no matter if they are slios or shells or full bodies or what ever because we hunt alot of traffic geese

for geese, it varies greatly. if we have alot of time, or in late season, we put out all of them. which is about 78 fullbodies, 60 shells, and a little less than 48 silos. sometimes, (and probably 60% of the time) we use just fullbodies with maybe a few silos thrown ina round the blinds or something. it varies everytime we go out.

1 doz. or less is the norm for me. I hunt away from the pressured areas and a lot of the times I put out only three dekes out. 2 hens 1 drake of differing species. I hunt a lot of potholes and farmponds. You'd be suprised what 1 hen mallard on jerkstring and some decent simple calling will do for you. I do have 4 doz. in reserve if needed or the situation warrants it. Some goose dekes too.

ponds, 2 dozen max, usually a dozen or so, divers, as many as i can get out, 70 or 80 decoys and as time goes on, ill be gettin more and more herters cans to paint, my diver rig has 4 dozen cans, 2 dozen bluebills, 1.5 dozen bufflehead and goldeneyes, half a dozen ruddys, half a dozen wigeon, a dozen mallards, a handful of blacks, a white duck(marina mallard) here or there, and a goose floater
pond spread, a dozen ringbills, 2 wigeon, a few mallards, and a handful of whatever is usin it, along with anywhere from 3 to 6 dozen goose floaters

I agree with you. I hunt a lot of public marshes and I don't like to carry more than a dozen. No problem shooting birds if your on the X.

All depends
Opener this year I hunted a small pothole and used 1/2 dozen woodies and 1/2 dozen teal. Sometimes I toss in 1/2 mallard hens.
Bigger potholes and flowages see 2-3 dozen mallards, 1 dozen ringnecks, 1 dozen teal, 1/2 dozen spring, 1/2 dozen widgeon, 1/2 dozen gray ducks and some coots along with fully flocked ringneck spinner and mallard spinner. MAYBE 1/2 dozen geese. Sometimes the heron.
BIG water and river rig sees alot. From 5-20 dozen. Cans, Redheads, buffies, ringnecks, whistlers, scaup, widgeon, coots and maybe a few mallards mixed in. I'm trying some custom scoters this year as well. I run some small mojos too and 2-3 seagulls. Might add a swan or two. NO GEESE!

For ducks we usually run 3 dozen, with 6 fullbodies on the shore, or more depending on where we are. What me and my buddy call the "fuge" spread would be something like 6-8 dozen duck floater with around 4 dozen FB's on the shore. We usually throw about 4 goose floaters and 6 FB's on the shore too just to make it look more relaxed. We have yet to put out that many decoys yet though.
Field never more than 6 dozen
