First Duck Hunt

We finally had our first duck hunt this morning. It was a blast! My buddy and I are definitely hooked...now we just have to learn to shoot better. We only managed one young drake mallard. It was the first one to hit the decoys. We saw one more a lil later but couldn't put it down. We blew it big time on 4 geese that were about 15-20 yards away when we started shooting. They were heading away, I gave a few simple honks and they turned (I was pretty excited that my calling actually turned them) and came in..but from behind us. My buddy didn't even think of turning around in the blind, there was nothing behind us except field, and shooting at them when they were cupped and steady. Instead, we waited til they flew directly over our blind, maybe 10-15 yards above us, and into the decoys. We started shooting when they were just about to land. I got off 2 shots and my buddy got off 3 and we didn't hit one of them. My dog gave me the dirtiest look. She went for a swim in the decoys just to make sure we didn't knock anything down.
Mya did pretty good..she was pretty excited at first, especially once we knocked that first duck down. On that duck though..she marked and it stayed steady in the blind without any restraint from me. She went to it once I released her..I was one pround papa. Here are some pics..enjoy..I did..can't wait to go again tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Went out for 2nd time today and got skunked ....barely even saw anything in the sky all day.

I think the dog wanted more action by the look on her face. But that is hunting. You will have plenty of time for the kill. The thing that got me hooked was the anticipation, that moment when the birds fully commit, and they have no idea that this will be their last flight. Priceless. Congrats on the drake. A success in my book.
