yup i shoot them and no i don't eat them they taste like crap. before any one gets on my ass for being wast full (don't shoot it if you don't eat it) let me tell you were im coming from. in my neck of the woods there are a lot of small lakes and ponds that are full of perch and some that have lots of brook trout. these are the ponds the mergs love needles to say i aint sharing. when mergs come threw later in the fall i have seen hundreds of them on the small lakes so i keep them off best i can. they are worse than cormorants. but i do use them as yoter bait .

Not really sure where everyone gets the idea that mergansers taste like crap. Has anyone even bothered to cook them? I did a taste test last week and cooked up a bunch of mallards and some mergs that we shot. Not a one of them could tell the difference. If you haven't tried it you should. Then if you don't like it you don't have to eat em, but I think you'll be surprised. Breast em and give them a dusting of seasoned flour. Fry em up in a little butter and they are delicious.

Biggest thing that affects flavor is the water they come from.

We shoot em too. Most of the time thats the only duck hunting we get in my area when it gets into Dec.

I even have 3 doz. common mergie dekes.

very good. i shoot 'em whenever possible and throw em in the trash. i love to trout fish and other types of fishin. these are terrible for that and they are all over. i just wish it was OK to shoot a commie:mad:

I suppose the waters could have something to do with the taste. Like I say, try breasting them out and cutting the breasts into chicken nugget sized pieces for bigger mergs. Throw some flower in a baggie, add in some spices, put the pieces in and shake it up. I like a little garlic powder and garlic salt with some pepper, but it's your call on the spices. Melt a little butter in a pan and fry up the pieces until they are golden brown on the outside. We also shoot mostly hoodies around here, but I tried it with three different merg species last time. We had a hood, a common, and a red breaster and my buddies couldn't tell the difference from the two mallards and they were looking for more when it was gone. To each his own I guess, but it's perfectly good meat. And yeah, cormorants are lame...wish we could shoot the thousands we see around here.
