A couple questions for you guys.

I am from MN/ND and i am planning a mid-January river hunting trip for me and a couple buddies.

Since the river is kind of big.... I really have no idea where to start. I've looked at several maps trying to get some sort of clue what part of the river to start at but haven't got very far.

Before you respond, note that i'm not looking for anyones specific honey hole just some general idea of where to start.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and also what do liscense's run for out of state for say a 5-7 day trip.

Thanks a bunch guys

like Torey said, go west if its in Nebraska, i wouldnt go any further east than Lake McConaughy, i think there are some good outfitters around Lisco/Lewellen. Hope this helps

Im not sure if your lookin' for an outfitter or not, but if so I would consider giving Pro-Staffer Jake Latendresse a shout. He is a topnotch guy, and has some incredible spots out west (in Nebraska). If you want his number shoot me a pm and ill get it to you.

Wasn't really looking to go through an outfitter, it's not really my thing. I wanna freelance it and have an awesome trip and experience out of it. Does anyone know how the Non Resident liscense works?

What do you want to know.

http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/hunting/guides/permfees.asp that is the fees.

For Non-residents, regardless of age, who hunt waterfowl must have:

-- Nebraska Non-Resident Hunting Permit
-- Nebraska Habitat Stamp
-- Nebraska Waterfowl Stamp
-- Federal Migratory Bird (Duck Stamp)
-- Harvest Information Program (HIP) registration

Duck season is open until Jan. 14th in the west where everyone is talking about.

Open til the fourteenth on the nebraska side or the kansas side or both??

How hard is it to get on land? Dangers of hunting the river? Depth??

Can't speak of the platte on Nebraska or Kansas Side, but the South Platte on the Colorado side is a river that will earn your respect. All sandy bottom rivers are continually changing animals...Where a sandbar was one day may be a murky surprise for you on the 2nd. Be especially mindful of log jams and eddys...these can and do kill atleast one hunter and dozens of dogs on a yearly basis. In January you can count on icebergs until noon or even early afternoon most cold days which makes setting up in the current next to impossible...you'll need to find a slough confluence or vegetated sandbar to hunt off of, and you'll want to use a boat to get there. ALWAYS wear a wader safety belt, and a CO2 propelled PFD, use a wading staff to feel the terrain in front of you, and NEVER use a dog, unless you get your hands on some remarkably shallow water, or back-river slough. Well, there's my piece of advice... be careful, and be prepared.

Just to let you know, the Platte River does not flow in Kansas. Were you looking to hunt both states though?

It can be pretty tough to get on land often times too. And as mentioned earlier, be very careful. Depthwise it can go from 6" deep to drowing in one step, always use a staff and test the footing in front of you. Take baby steps and don't put all your wieght on the foot your stepping with untill you know for sure it's solid bottom.
