Ok I went out this morning, it was a cool morning with a lil bit of wind. We shot at a pair of ducks in the AM teal I believe. So there was a front moving in this afternoon, I get out of school at 2:40 so My friends and I were gonna go out hunting. We got all of the stuff redy and took off to the boat launch, It was getting windy with a lil bit of rain. We thought the ducks were gonna be flyin, we get in the boat and I pull back to start the motor 1 pull..... and the pull cord snaped! total distance to the blind... about half a mile  we were determined so we paddled all the way there tired and wet! We got our deeks out about 4 DZ total with geese, mallards and woodies. We only had about an hour and a half hunt, we saw maybe 6 ducks and about 4 geese. my friend 3 mins before shooting light ended I left to get the boat (back side of island) and he cut into 3 ducks and missed them :p So we were paddling back and another hunter offered to tow us back to the launch! that was our highlight of the hunt :D

And your point is. What if those "teal" were illegal to shoot...then what?...huh??
Lets say he doesn't know the difference between a redhead and canvasback. One is illegal to shoot in some flyways...and he bags a can....hmmmm, do I ask here, what it was....dump it in the mud...are you getting the legal parts of what I'm trying to say......sweet mary mother....stupid is as stupid does, and yes I'm just a little upset....can you tell???????????????????

Rob- Don't throw out the "freakin kids" argument but I do agree with you on your points. You guys must know your target before you shoot or some bad things can happen.

Listen...I'm grown up enough to not tell you what I really think, but what i really know. I've been on this earth longer then you know...It's kids like you that ruin it for us experienced hunters. I spent countless hours in the field and behind books...going over what a certain species looks like..from almost every angle......don't lecture me on my.5%

Sorry Andrew....I didn't mean that...or the way it sounded. I applaud kids coming into waterfowling and other types of hunting. We need them. I may have went over the top....but, not knowing what you are shooting at...just strikes a nerve.

Dude....????.....I'm not even going to continue with the likes of you. You can't see past you face to know anything I'm speaking of....and I don't blame you for being upset with my comments...but, step back and learn...take a minute and take it all in.....be totally sure of your target.
I apologize if I came across to strong....but you have to remember.....there are others out there, that will judge you much harsher then I....

littleman, I have to tell you, you are one of the most dedicated hunters man! That is the way to do it! I have paddled a long ways before as well, but not that far! Awesome story....sorry about your motor. what kind of motor do you have. that pull cord can most likely be fixed. yes and too all waterfowlers and even other game hunters out there, make sure you know what you are shooting at. Game "I.D." is one of the most important things in pursuing game, whether it is big or small. I'm am not picking out anyone on here at all, it was just a nice friendly reminder. oh and bremseth, I might be up at fergus in a couple weeks, and def. late season!

No problems.....I want every kid or young adult to have the best knowledge out there. I just keeping seeing and reading stories that these youngins are always doing something wrong. I was never perfect...but when it came to duck and goose hunting....I tried to be better then everyone around me. It just strikes me the wrong way...when someone can't ID a bird very well.
To be honest....as my eyes get weaker..I'm having problems....so I let them get closer..so I can...if I can't positively ID'em...I let'em go.
I commend you on paddling the boat that far...been there done that...it sucks.
Hope you get it fixed and can have at it, with more enjoyment.

Take Care
Rob

first of all its definitely impotent to know your birds. but being the first of the morning he did have some play. if he narrowed it down to teal, hoodys,or woodys he could have killed both birds and been legal beagle. and the last thing you nead to pipe your ass down and not over exert the situation. you took the (phrase teal i believe.)to him being a can poaching mud stuffer.:D their is enough internet tough guys we don't nead anther one.

So he shot a can . What is the difference in that or the ass olls in the bay that shut red heads all day and use a small 12foot boat to shuttel birds to shore. At least this guy was telling the truth. accidents happen we are all human and we will be the ones to pay for them if we make a mistake .:D

Id'ing small birds such as teal and mergs can be difficult, even young wood ducks can be hard, but he has plenty of leway on any of the species, chalk it up to experience and let it go.

How many of you know what kind of teal you shoot before you pull the trigger?

MarshRunner

I really dont want to start another argument but....there are very few of us that can say that weve never been in that situation....saying that i think its this duck but im not totally sure. Being a young hunter and finally being allowed to hunt without dad is a big deal and everyone of us wanted to show dad that we could do it!!!

I commend u on your Resilience. I would not worry about everyone riding your hynie over this. You knew it was one of three species all in confines of the law here in MI.

We had a similiar situation a few weeks ago. We were hunting a pond that had been littered by mallards and teal. Right at shooting light on an overcast day a bird decoyed coming over our heads just like a mallard and ended up being a female ringer. We had a fellar in our group whom is a well veteraned diver hunter and he didnt recognize until the bird was retrieved.
