I found this news release on the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation Website and thought it was worth sharing:

Increasing Resident Angler and Hunter numbers continue to “Buck” the North American trends

A recently released 10 year comparative study on hunting and angling license sales in Saskatchewan by the Provincial Ministry of Environment has shown that unlike almost every other jurisdiction in North America, Saskatchewan resident angler and hunter numbers are on the increase.

“The report confirms some very interesting dynamics in our angling and hunting community that our Provincial Government should take special interest in” states Darrell Crabbe, Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF).

Crabbe points out that in spite of declining non-resident hunter numbers, the total number of licensed hunters in our Province actually increased by a 1000 in 2007 bolstered by an additional 2000 residents taking to the field last year. This brings us to the highest hunter numbers we have seen since 1999.

Angling numbers also reflect this trend, with non-resident numbers dropping for the fourth straight year a loss of over 3000 from 2006 -2007.However, overall angling license sales were up to over 183,000 in 2007 which is the highest total since 2001. Again the increase represents additional resident uptake in the activity. (Anglers under the age of 16 do not require an angling license).

In 2006 the Provincial Government released the Economic Impact Study on Hunting and Angling in our Province and reported that in 2005 these activities generated over $300 million in economic spin off, primarily to rural Saskatchewan and second only to Gaming in tourism dollars generated in our province.

Crabbe goes on to say “The gaming industry invests significant monies in television, radio, print and other media to successfully promote those activities in our Province. There is no doubt that there would be substantial positive economic, quality of life and health benefits realized if the Provincial Government were to make a similar investment into the protection and enhancement of our wildlife resources and promotion of angling, hunting and other outdoor recreational activities to Saskatchewan residents.“

The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation has over 26,000 members in 120 branches across Saskatchewan and is, per capita, the largest wildlife conservation organization of its kind in the world.
