Is there a steel shot size that works just about as well on ducks like mallards as it does on geese inside 35 yards? I have been switching between #3 for ducks and BB for geese but this is getting a little old. I was thinking of trying Fast Steel #2 for an all around load but I was wondering how effective it would be on late season geese. All of my shots are over decoys so I'm not trying to stretch any shells range. Just wanted some opinions.

I would just shoot the BBs for both they seem to do fine on geese and bigger ducks.

I generally use BB loads in the same situation. Just fine on geese, and though there are fewer pellets heading for the smaller mallards, close up shots don't matter for that. I have used 1's but I have had better luck with BB.

I have used 2's, just never again with fasteel. But I have used them and had good luck on decoying birds. And Im using a light mod. choke. if you used some thing different, you could get a much tighter pattern hitting those honkers, although it may make it a little harder to get the mallards.

I shoot Fasteel #2 all around for everything. As Zach Byron stated, I also shoot a long range PM, and seem to kill both ducks and geese just fine.

Fasteel #1s work well for me as a duck/goose combo load. If I know we won't be getting into the geese on a hunt I'll go as far as #4s for ducks. I would suggest experimenting until you find what your gun likes best. I recently tried some Hevi-Steel #2s and found it actually doesn't pattern as well as Fasteel in my gun.

IMO #2 shot is the best for both ducks and geese. Unless your shooting in super close 25 yds and in. Sometimes put a BB in as my last shell.

3" 2's and 4's are all I really use now on ducks and geese! I like throwing more pellets out there when I smack them in the head!

I am with Ben Cade. I really like the Kent Faststeel #1's when I can find them.

I Buy the Cheapest 3 1/2 2"s I can buy...I guess that is the college kid in me :D
I also run a pattern master which patterns really well with the 2's

I bought a case of faststeel 1's for spring snows and I was pretty impressed. I use 3 inch 2's Federal Ultra Shok on ducks and 3 in BB's on geese. If I get surprised by either species I will just take them with what's in my gun.

I buy Kent Faststeel #2 and shoot them for everything waterfowl. If they have #1's I buy them but they are hard to find. We'll shoot tons of giant canadian honkers with #2's no problem but we do decoy them in pretty close.
Occassionally I wll shoot smaller shot sizes for ducks.
