I try to teach my young gunners the proper way to do things. However, a question arose in the pit one day from a young hunter and I didn't really know what to say. Give me your opinions please.
What is the best/ most humane way to dispatch injured/crippled waterfowl.

Thanks for any opinions you can give. We are talking young ( 13 and under ) hunters. Steve

I have no problem shooting them a second time. Seems to be most humane to me. We owe it to our quarry to put them down as quickly as possible.

It all depends. If the dog has a good line, and the bird looks incapacitated enough, I let the dog get it, and then upon delivery, I kill them.
Rather than ring their necks, I use the tip of a multi tool (flat screw driver tip) and insert it at the base of the brain in the back of the head. It kills them instantly and does not ruin them for photos. Very humane way of dispatching them.

If the are still swimming i will give them another shot but if there are alive and just floating there i will walk up with my gun and ring there necks if they dont swim or fly away.

On the new 24-7 Duck Camp from Zink calls, Warren Coco shows how to dispatch the birds by taking a wing feather, and sliding it in the back of the head like Mark said. It works great!

If there still alive and trying to get away I shoot them again with no hesitation. But if they aren't trying to get away I just take my leatherman and rap on the head with it once, kills them instantly if you hit hard enough.

I do Both it all depends on how lively the bird is.
