there aint not blue on its beak, last two pics, yellow and black. just look at a fully mature gadwall, they have a tail end exactly like that, not a big sprig but a littler "baby sprig" almost. also, look at the white wing patch and whiteness on the wings towards the end of the wings. brewers duck, cool duck none the less

J Kryspin- That duck looks fairly close, i see the resemblence of a gadwall in that duck, but no resemblance in jeffs duck, the feathers around the wing look like a gadwall on your, but jeffs shows no sign of a gadwall.
Duckin- i looked at hundreds of photos on drake gadwalls and there is no sign of a sprig on gadwalls, only ducks to have sprigs are widgeon, and the pintail.
Im still sticken with mallard pintail cross.
The beak shows alot of sign of a pintail, and also the tail.

I'll join Krispy's side on this one.....
Look up pics of mallard X pintails..
Now look up pics of Brewers ducks (gadwall X Mallard)....
Notice the redish coloring in the head, orange bill w/ black stripe down the center, next look at the body coloration and you should be able to note that it's undoubtedly a brewers duck.........
The pintail X Mallard crosses that I have seen all have an almost solid green head with a white strip around the bottom of the head comming up into the head.
100% on this being a Brewers duck...
Guess this goes to show.....

Because you guys focus on one little attribute and not the entire bird.
Does a pintail have white on the speculum? Does a gadwall?

Now now now gentlemen,
We can put this to rest right now (as if Krispy hasn't already).
Speculum...
Head color dilution...
Flank colors...
Shape of head...
There is absolutely no evidence that this duck has a lick of pintail in it.
This duck does have a pointy tail.
This duck does have a bronze sheen to it's crown.
I can see how someone COULD come to an assumption that this bird contains Pintail, but it doesn't.
Also just a reminder, there is no such thing as a Mallard with "a little pintail in it". When ducks of different species cross breed, there is almost no possibility of fertile offspring (with the exceptions of Mallard/Black Duck and Mallard/Mottled Duck crosses and the very unlikely, yet still possible Black/Mottled Duck which I've never even heard of). What this means is that any WILD crossbred (again, with the exceptions) duck is a 50/50 cross of it's parents. There is no "heavy on the Mallard" crosses with Pinnies, Gaddies or Teal. That much is not naturally plausible.
Krispy is 100% on point here... which to join the bandwagon, means he has indeed spoken.
- Scary
P.S. - I'm glad to try and answer any questions you may have about it.

This is definently a mallard X pintail hybrid. It has a pintail shaped and colored bill, it has a sprig and it has the chocolate head coloring and the speculum looks to be mixed between mallard and pintail. A gadwall hybrid would have more feather vermiculation markings.

If it's part gadwall why does it have a pintail colored bill? If it was a mallard gadwall hybrid it would have a the charicteristics of both, but it has blue down the side of the bill.

It doesn't. The bills is yellow and black. Last time i check a pintail has a blue bill. Mallard has yellow. Gadwall has black. Lets add em up.
It has a rusty coloration in the head, not the chocolate brown of a pintail. There is no vertical stripe going up the neck of the bird like in a pintail or pinnie/mallard cross.
It doesnt have a full sprig which is a sure sign of a pintail/mallard cross.
Pintail has no white in the speculum. Its green.
The Flanks match that of a gadwall and so does head shape.

Sadly I haven't killed any hybrids. I have a few of these pictures saved on my HDD and know where to get some from various other forums for comparison.
Yes it looks kind of like a Bahama x Pinnie cross but it's not quite there. Bahama pinnies have a lot of brown in them.
http://www.mirandaapps.co.uk/jpgs/bahama%20pintail.jpg
Notice the gray legs? Same as with a North American Pintail. The bird in question is showing some yellow in the legs typical of a Gadwall. Bahama Pintails head is a light brown whereas the NA Pintail is a dark chocolate. The bird in question displays a purple sheen, an uncommon trait in gadwalls but present none the less.
Going to have to go with Pintail x Gadwall on this one, although the white cheek patch is a ringer for sure.:D

To those that have done their homework, I congradulate. Audubon first identified the Mallard/Gadwall a.k.a. Brewer's duck in the 1800's, so that point of identification has been around for quite some time. Hybrid birds aren't like mixing paint. Certain genetic consistancies exist like the white tertails in Brewer's Ducks, white neck ring, albeit elongated, in Mallard/Pintails. Brewer's has yellow stripe on upper mandible, Mallard/Pintail is blue. Subtle keys remain true in these hybrids as to what they are. The other hybrid in question is a Mallard/Gadwall as correctly identified at first. No White-cheeked Pintail whatsoever in that one.
Coloration will vary in the heads of Brewer's but bill and wing pattern will remain constant.

Gaddie bills are also narrow like a pintail. The shape of that bill can just as easily point to a Gadwall.
