So one of the older guys I hunt with told us we'd have consistently better luck seeing and decoying birds when we hunt them at the grocery store (in the field) rather than hunting them at home (on the lake). I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he was in fact right. There were days last year where we had seen more birds (namely mallards) come in on one flock then what we shot down on the lake through a few weeks worth of hunting. My question to you guys is: Got any more old-timer hunter sayings that have consistently held true? If so, let's hear them.

My father always says that "one in the hand is worth two in the bush". Meaning that if you have one bird in the decoys you should take him because he is worth more than the other birds that might not finish.

"Hunt 'em at the Grocery Store"

That phrase will forever hold true - you can have better quality hunts for a lot longer.

Take a shot at someone at the grocery store (fields) and chances are they'll find a different store.
Take a shot at someone in their bedroom (roost) and chances are they're gonna pack up shop and find somewhere else to live.

Don't shoot the roost fellas...

Don't shoot the roost is a good tip...unless you like pushing your birds off to someone else's property.

Don't hunt past noon.

Only shoot decoying birds...less cripples, don't waste ammo.

Curious to why you wouldn't want hunt past noon?

Let the birds get back in there to rest and relax

not only does shooting them on the roost run them out of that field... lots of times it will also run them out of the immediate area!!!

Not always true....there are some exceptions...I am strictly against shooting the roost, but we have one place that is a small pothole where 300-400 wood ducks and probably 50-100 mallards roost every night....We hunt it once a week (2-3 guys) shoot our limit of birds (3 woodies per day last year) and get out.....we can do that every week of the season until freeze up, taking our limit each time, and usually a few woodie bands each year and the birds never leave because we are very careful about how we hunt the spot, not shooting into large groups, overhunting the spot, or making noise and scaring the other birds, trying to get in there, out....
most people don't have the self control to only hunt places like that once a week...that's where roost hunting becomes the problem and pushes birds out of the area.

You won't push the birds out of the area.

Give the birds a chance to settle down, rest, eat, and loaf in peace without being harassed.
