It appears that some widgeon just can't keep it in their pants ;)

Guys I gotta tell you that I think that may be a widgeon/gadwall. look at the colors on the wings and back. I shot a mallard/widgeon 4 years ago and it does not look like that bird....

How would it have a yellow bill if it was a gadwall mix?

You also got to think that it is not in full plumage like it will be in a few months too.

Sweet bird, great picture!

You should post this picture over at a taxidermy site and see what ansewers you get there for the X breed.

First of all not all hybrids are phenotypically the same. There are various degrees of coloration. But, there are markers to look for. In the very first picture notice the whitish spot below the tail. It can only come from a Mallard. Not a Gadwall. The extended erectricies are from the Wigeon's sprig and Mallard's curl. If it had Gadwall this would be absent and with a Gadwall there would be heavy breast vermiculation and also not the pale graying in the flanks. And a black Gadwall bill crossed with the Wigeon blue doesn't make yellow so you can rule out Gadwall. I would like to see a picture of the flying hybrid before it was mounted as I suspect the bill is repainted somewhat a little off color as the paint job is pure Wigeon. Just MO. The Mallard drake is the agressor in all of the hybridizations and occurs usually after his mate is setting the eggs and he finds a female, not necessairily his own kind, that has lost a clutch or a mate and breeds her. A Pintail drake is another one that often exhibits this. And as long as we're at this the spelling of Wigeon was changed years ago, in the 70's, and the "D" taken out.

Here's a couple of MallardxWigeon hybrids I have mounted in the past.

yep, totally agree with the waterfowler, no question a mallard/widgeon, i got a question for ya though

back in the days of the points system what did a hybrid count for? say a 10 point pintail mixed with a 20 point mallard

Whichever bird was the lowest point value according to Feds that I asked that question to. But I have run across some wardens that couldn'd distinguish a hen Gadwall from a hen Wigeon, etc. and it was always at their disgression. I'd go to court over it though.

Waterfowler-I've seen your taxidermy collections and I know you know what you are talking about. Thanks for your input! :)
