JOURNAL NOTES:
Just before the fat lady took the stage to herald the end of the Missouri north zone duck season, it was time to get in one last hunt before turning my attention to geese. I found myself again at my favorite public area with several folks that had the same idea I did. Luck is not often on my side but that day she was squarely in my corner. I had to work at 3 pm so I was traveling light. The guys I was supposed to hunt with had an alarm malfunction. It worked out all right for me, though, as I found some other guys that invited me to hunt with them.
The ice was still present but now in 2-3 inch thickness of rotten ice. No more walking on top and hunting out of finishers. It took until daylight to find open water. We set up quickly but things just weren’t right. The chunk ice made things difficult and ducks did not want to work well. A short scout around revealed more open water that we had missed in the dark. Luckily we had reserved half the decoys in case just a situation came up.
The move was a good one. Just after we moved it was ON! We decoyed drakes to 15 yards and took turns one at a time. By 10:15 our limit of mallards was complete. It was a heck of a way to end the north zone season. It seems like every trip there is one piece of equipment that stands out whether it’s the decoys, the call, etc. The floating blind bag was the hero for me this day. It’s pretty easy to find someone with an Avery blind bag, the most popular bag produced, but it’s kinda like health insurance…you don’t know just how valuable it is until you need it. While loading the boat after the hunt my bag somehow got knocked out into the water. It had everything including my camera, 2 boxes of shells, calls, mag lite, etc., but there it was sitting up on the water. No harm came to my camera or any damage to the gear. It sure is nice to have equipment that works the way it’s supposed to.
