This past saturday 1/14/06 they were calling for 25 mph winds down here. We had found a good number of birds on one spot of the lake and we'd figured we would give them a try this weekend. We get set up right before shooting time and we think the weather man was wrong again. Just about then the wind started to houl right in our faces. We saw some birds coming off the river and heading to the other side of the lake not even giving us a look. By 0830 we figure screw this and we'll go get something to eat. Pull the boat out of the water head into the local Hardee's and grab some food. Another buddy of mine called me and said they had just put a new pump on at his lease and asked if he could come hunting with us. He heads out there and we go back to the same area to find out where the birds are. We run about 4 miles across the lake, the chop was about 3 foot which really sucked, and found whre the birds were. About 3000 gadwalls, ringnecks, buffleheads, and bluebills. Kick them out, set up the GHG Gadwalls, Widgeons, Rinknecks and then my 3 handcarved bufflehead decoys since GHG doesn't make any yet :D WE pull to the bank and load up, start taking some pictures when my buddy Wills, looks up and says hey there's a duck sitting in the decoys, sure nuff drake gadwall was swimming around with his brothers. We jump him up and shoot him. Birds came in 2's 10's and 50's all day long. A lot of times we didn't shoot, we would just watch them. We ended up shooting 3 Alabama limits that day(gadwalls and ringnecks). We also missed a big fat black duck which really sucked but at least we got the other two gadwalls that were with him. Sorry this is so long but I thought ya'll would enjoy the read. Thanks guys and hurry up with the buffleheads and goldeneyes. I'll post some pics up when they get developed.
