I was trying to think of ideas for making a blind on my 11 ft. kayak. Do any of you use a kayak for hunting or have any ideas about how to make one? Pictures would also be great.

I have a small 10 ft duck boat that is very similar to a kayak. I don't have pics but here is what I did. Get a long length of 1/8 or 1/4 inch bungy cord, most marine stores have it. I drilled small holes through the fiberglass in the top portion/deck of the boat and ran the bungy cord through. I then put fast grass under the bungy to cover the boat. When paddling I take the grass off and roll it up, then when I get to my spot I put the grass back on. I also use two two foot dowels to prop the grass up in front of me little bit. The boat is also painted in a camo design. My boat is wide and is a pain to paddle but the wide beam makes it stable. Be careful if your kayak has a narrow beam it may not provide the best shooting platform. I'm also thinking about adding a towable plastic tote that floats to carry more decoys.
Lastly- depending on where you are hunting sometimes its easier to paddle to a spot and then ditch the boat in the reeds/grass and then sit in cover.

xdasher19,

BE CAREFUL! I know lots of people use kayaks for hunting. And I’m not saying do or don’t. But do to my experience last duck season. I would tell you that if you do, use your head and be careful.

I hunt out of a small 8ft layout boat. I just spary painted it to look like a tree. The only problem I get from that is the reflection. I found by having a blind like fast grass gets to be too much in the boat after a limmit is filled. I where all brake up camo to blend in with the boat in hopes that it looks like a floating log.
I to suggest using your head, I have had one very close call where the river was alot higher then I had intisapated. It almost cost me my life, so watch your weater reports if your going on a small river.

I hunt out of a 12' Poke Boat

which is very similar to a Kayak. My boat has Advantage Wetlands material glassed into the deck and the rest of the boat is in OD. As some of the guys have mentioned that when you try to put all sorts of extra weight on these small boats it can become dangerous.

Here are some suggestions and some of the ways I hunt out of my boat. You might want to try just painting your kayak in a camo pattern. Then if you can stash your boat in the brush and wear a headnet you can shoot from your boat.

I also carry a small folding stool and sometimes after paddling to where I want to hunt and set up my spread, stash the boat in the brush and sit on the stool to shoot from.

I also do alot of float trips down the Colorado River here in Arizona and basically lay down on my back while paddling around corners slowly and then I am able to shoot birds as the jump up off of sand bars and get airborne.

I normally carry about 1 dozen decoys and a small cooler as well with water and lunch.

I also carry a small dry bag with cell phone, gps/frs radio, flashlight, lighter and a change of clothes.

Another thing I do is tether my padddle and shotgun to my boat in case I drop one or the other or the boat rolls. Hasn't happened yet, but you never know.

And last but not least I always wear a LIFE JACKET.

Hope some of this will help, if you have any more questions just let me know and I will do my best to answer them for you.

Jeff

I was just planning on using it to get to my hunting spot when we hunt with 3 people. (2 in my canoe and 1 in Kayak)..We would be hunting off of a island and not be hunting out of the kayak or canoe..we would only use the kayak for transportation and retreving birds..thanks for all the ideas
