Everyone talks about the field duck decoys and field hunting ducks. I have always wanted to do this but the problem is I live in Indiana and I have looked for ducks in the field for three years now and have never seen one. So I don't think it would be worth a shot since there is no "X" in any of the fields.
Any suggestions??
I just don't think we get enough ducks...

Hunter,
In most cases conversation with other hunters, local DNR, county road workers, anybody covering alot of ground in their daily duties can often supply valuable information as to the whereabouts of fowl and their habits. But as usual, you may just have to extend your reach and put some miles on to find what you are looking for. Good Luck.

I agree with what was said earlier. Bascially, it comes down to doing some scouting for the fields that the ducks are using. Once you have found the field look to see when the ducks are using it ie; morning or afternoon. Set up accordingly and you should do ok.
We have done this with very good results. Weather has a lot to do with it as well. When the weather starts getting bad the ducks should start moving, actually, the ducks should start moving right before a major cold front is coming through. Check the weather patterns and plan accordingly.
Good luck and show us some pics.

Try scouting them the opposite way, find them on the water and follow them to their feeding area. Ducks in a field is an absolute blast and if you are set up correctly it is amazing to watch them finish, we had several flocks walking in the GHG fullbody Mallards during our early season here in Iowa.

I would scout them by sitting on the lake you see them roost on, and then follow them out in the mornings. Not the easiest maybe, but it is effective.

I learned hunting ducks in fields by Erie PA, that they seem to visit the fields up there very early, like first light. While we see geese around through ten or eleven in the mid morning, the ducks seem to only hang around for an hour or so after sun up. I don't know why, but that is how it was. We needed to scout very early to find them. Once we found them, we had a lot of fun in the first hour or so.
