TEMPERATURE: High 77..yuck! Low 48
WIND: SE at 5

HUNTERS: Tracy Allen, Brett Allen, and Avery Pro Staffer Derek Rambo.
JOURNAL NOTES: My good duck hunting buddy , Brett Allen, and proud Aggie(GIG EM) now lives in North Carolina. His career has taken him out there and the chances to hunt with him have been narrowed down to Christmas vacation. The time is now and we got ducks!!!
WE decided to head out to Brett’s dad’s place in west Texas. Tracy has a large deer lease with several ponds and slews on it that holds a good amount of ducks every winter. After he scouted all of them for a couple of days, we locked in on a small grass filled pond that tons of gadwalls and wigeon were using daily. We set out the GHG deks and grassed up the Finishers…all we had to do is wait for shooting time. Ten minutes before shooting time there were several flocks of teal, wigeon, gadwalls, and ringnecks circling the pond. After several splashdowns the time came…..7:07…”load em’ up, it’s time”, I said. The first group of ducks that fell to the booms of pre dawn fire was gadwalls. Several stayed. Next to hover above the decoys were small flocks of wigeon. 3-10 birds a flock were the norm, as we took turns trying to take drakes only, in the hard to see light. Several stayed and it was becoming a great day even before sunup! All three dogs, Champ, Poncho, & Abby, were getting their work too and watching the dogs is always exciting. As the sun cracked the horizon I counted our bag and we were already over half way to the limit of 18 birds! The rest of the morning we took out gadwalls, wigeon, pintails, and a pair of bombing in Jacks. Even a lone mallard drake could not stand the realism of the GHG fakes, and stayed for good! Total tally was 18 ducks including 9 wigeon! Awesome!!
Great day with friends and good dogs especially when you can drive to the waters edge, pitch the decoys, and shoot a limit before breakfast! This is what it’s all about!!
Check out the moon!
