I've been doing it for about 7-8 years and love it! Took my 25th bird last spring. It has breathed new life into my turkey hunting.
Anyone else?

WOW! You really make me feel bad now! I dream of one day harvesting a bird with my bow. While I have never attempted it in the spring, there has been a number (ok a large number) of times that I have tried to get one while deer hunting. Never got past half draw. Those things have eyes in the back of their heads!!! Congrats on your success, that is remarkable in my opinion. Maybe if if Mark Hoke would have me in camp with him, I'd give it a whirl, I hear he is the man to put them in your lap!

I did it for the first time last spring. I must admit it was the hardest thing I have ever done while trying to kill an animal. I didn't do it by choice. In MN if you do not get drawn for a gun tag the only way you can hunt is to buy an archery license over the counter. The tag is good for the last 14 days of the season. This means hunting in May when most of the breeding is done and the gobblers are very quiet. It took me 10 consecutive day of hard hunting to finally connect with a mature gobbler. It was one of the most satisfying feelings to be carrying that bird over my shoulder out of the woods. If I don't get drawn for a gun tag this year, you can bet I will be carrying my bow into the woods those last 14 days of the season.

Oooo... Recurve truly impressive! Good looking birds guys!
I switch it up... I have harvested turkeys with both compound and shotgun...It is very rewarding especially with a bow. For animals having a pea sized brain with amplified hearing and sight I must say they have often out smarted me more than I would like to admit... tongue.gif
Where is everyone hunting for turks? Or applied?
I always hunt Minnesota and Black Hills, SoDak. I also applied for Wisconsin and maybe heading down to Arkansas and Missouri depending on vacation time... I need more of it!!! :D

Heather, I will be going to Kansas, Illinois (given), MO, and possibly Colorado. It has gotten into my blood BAD!. A friend of mine tried to take a jake this fall. It got within 20 yards and got behind a persimon tree. He said he could not see any part of the turkey...and then the turkey threw his head and neck backwards (towards his tail) and that was all sticking out! He sat there and stared right at him. Walked a big circle all the way around him. Their sight is still just amazing!!!! Good luck to everyone this spring.

Heather, where do you hunt in the Black Hills? I will be going out there for the first time turkey hunting this year. I hunted turkeys for the first time with a bow last year around Newton Hills in south east South Dakota but they were always to smart for me. Wouldnt come to decoys or calls. You would never believe how smart they can be!

SD, I usually stay in Hill City and head out around that vacinity. Outside of Custer is very good aswell. Dig deeper off the main logging roads as you will see more hunters around them. I will be honest bow is tough in the hills as most of the time they see you before you see them with all the elevations, ridges and vast cover. My best experiences are running and gunning..... You will have a blast as half the time I am not even paying attention to the turkeys but the elk that migrate into the lower elevations, the muleys, antelope, mountain lions...you name it...its pure heaven and plenty of public tromping ground for hunters too.
This spring I am hunting Ron Schara's place in Sturgis where I will be doing archery but it is lower elevations compared to where I have hunted in the past. Let me know how you fare. You will have a blast! Remember to bring a camera! :)

Something about Bow hunting even though they outsmart me alot i just keep going back. I think bow hunting add an element of difficulty to already smart bird. After bow hunting for 3 years and taking 6 birds. Shot gun hunting would probably seem like a walk in the park.
