Just wondering if you guys are planning on coming out with your own goose flag or pole system??? smile.gif
I just don't like the brands or what I am seeing on the market as options.

Most likely. We have been kicking around a few new good ideas. If we do this will be a fall 06 item.
What don't you like about the others on the market?

Heath,
We are probably going to do something in the flag line. As of right now, we don't know which way we want to go.
Thanks,

Eric,
I don't like the amount of shine the flags out there have. It's like waving a mirror to the geese. I like the idea of Avery/GHG coming out with a flag. I would also like something that gets up there a little higher like a kite. Dakota Kid

Maybe Avery/GHG should look at developing a flapper decoy as well as a flag, I am with DK about shine on the flags out there now.

What are some features in a flag you guy's would like to see?

I would like to see a telescoping pole that you can use either all the way out or short and still be easy to use.

My reason for the flag post mainly is I do not like the brands that offer the flag. I perfer the longer pole most of the time for flagging in honkers also. The retractable poles are awesome. I don't like the shine either on the material because those honkers are usually looking for something to pick off. Perhaps a two sided flag that is interchangeable for Canada geese and Snow geese with the opposite side easiler concelable dependent on what kind of field you are hunting (either corn/bean/cultivated/camo color array) with a undetected color of a pole too.
I was at Cabela's the other day looking at what they had to offer. I had about two different one's in my hand and kept looking over at the Avery display wondering why don't you guys have a flag out. I left empty handed and that is the reasoning for this post. I didn't want to buy one that I feel didn't fit what I was looking for.. I want to be confident in the tools I have in the field and water ;)
Thanks for listening and let me know if you guys come out with anything anytime soon, Heather from Minnesota smile.gif

We all know how important flagging is and we have some good ideas and hope to get something going for next year. I really like the telescoping idea...what else?

It needs to be strong material. I had the wind shred three of my flags up in NoDak this year.

If you do a telescoping pole....please make sure the sections are lockable. By that I mean, you can lock down the sections that are not in use. I have a telescoping pole now and that is my biggest complaint. As you are carrying the pole, it is constantly "extending" itself and it makes for a real pain.
The shine issue is a big one as well...both with the pole and flag material.
Although, I would have to say durability is the biggest issue....we have broken 4 flags this year. These were not broken due to negligence or abuse. They broke during normal use while hunting geese (no high winds, the dog didn't step on it, etc.). The weakest point on all of the flags on the market today is where the "wings" attach to the pole or handle. All of our flags that have broken have either cracked the pole at the attachment site or the "wing rods" have slid in too far and cracked off.
Just some thoughts.....

I have Foiles flag that I have been pretty pleased with, it doesn't telescope, but it does fit nicely in the Avery gun case with the flag slot on the side. The pole is just some sort of composite golf club with a piece on the end to accept the wing rods. It also has a golf club grip on it which is a nice option and helps you hang onto it on icy/windy days. I think a composite (definitely not wood) pole would be the best route.
The main problem I have with all flags is that the elastic piece that holds the wing rods into the pole always seems to wear out and lose its stretchiness. Once that wears out, there is no tension pulling the wings into the pole and the wing rods always seem to fall out of the pole. This has happened on every flag I have owned. How about coming up with a different design where the wing rods have a positive lock into the pole, not a small piece of elastic that wears out.
I too like the black/camo reversible option.
I also don't like the fact that on all the flags the wing rods are not attached to the material. That either allows them to slide out of the wings and you lose the wing rod, or it slides too far into the pole and the flag doesn't operate properly.
So where can I buy the new Avery flag?

Another thought....
Offer different wings with black on one side and different camo patterns sewn on the other side. The interchangable velcro option will just come apart when the velcro gets dirty and create problems. Why not just make different wings that you can take on and off to use with one pole.
Sell them modular, meaning sell the pole and wings seperatly. You could offer an Avery Falgging Pole, and Avery Flagging Wings. Sell the wings with different reversible options...black/Shadowgrass, Black/Max4, Black/winter wheat(green), black/snow(white). That way you could minimize the cost and offer the hunter different options to fit their situation.

Bearman:
Great ideas....the only problem I see with the reversible deal - F.A. has already done that....I don't know how that would affect Avery in terms of producing a flag like that.
Other than that...great ideas!!! I agree with them all!!!

Browning makes a reversible flag too...can't imagine that being patented...

I wouldn't think it would be a patent issue...more of one of integrity....a "you stole our idea" kind of thing.
How about some more input from the Avery folks????

I don't think that anybody can start the ol "you stole our idea" deal. Ninety percent of the waterfowl gear other companies are making have been from our products. I'm not going any further than this.
Thanks,

I wasn't trying to start anything Rick....just simply stating that the "you stole our idea" thing is prevalent in the waterfowl industry and that Avery is NOT one to do such things.
And the "more input from the Avery folks" statement was not geared toward the previous statement....it was meant to ask for more input on the flag design.
I should have been clearer....my apologies if I offended anyone.

I had a shine issue with my flags I just took some black spray paint and put a light coating.
I bet when Avery does make one it will be in my blind.

the camo sided ones are alright but the wind can still gust and blow it up at the wrong time. I would like to see a flag with some kind of design that would allow it to completly collapse down maybe with a push of a button so you could pull it into the blind with you. It could still be camo on one side so that you can just lay it down but some days when those geese are real finniky you could get their attention and then put it away. just my 2 cents.
