View Full Version : Why Are GHG FB Actives Called Actives ?

It's been my experience that birds on the ground in the positions that are available in the GHG FB Actives, are in fact inactive. These birds, like humans are more adept at picking up movement, and thus possibly danger when they themselves are not moving. While certainly not as 'sentry' looking as the GHG FB Lookers, the Actives do seem to be quite passive. JMHO.
Any other thoughts ?
BTW, I was able to pick up a dozen (2 boxes) of the GHG FB Feeders tonight from the local Gander for $109.99. Instore special - $20 off. Would have bought more, but I got the last 2 boxes. ANd yess, I had more room in the Jetta !

wi-fowler - Actually I think they look very much like they are moving. I use most of my actives in a lunch line, like they are walking up to the rest of the "geese" after landing short. I then have one here and there in the spread... HAving several different head options in each body style helps the spread come alive too.
Where are you from in Wisconsin??

Mark, since you put it that way - that is to say using them in a lunch line, I can understand the naming. During the early season I used the actives in with GHG O/S shells, with a looker or two. On the outskirts of the spread, I used lookers and actives, to simulate "just landing" and scoping out the on-the-ground scene. It was deadly.
I'm originally from east central Wisconsin - Ripon. Born and raised there. Now, I'm in the Allenton area about 45 min north of Milwaukee. It can be a fair commute on those days that I have to be in Milwaukee for work, but the benefits of living where I can hunt out my back door (Theresa Marsh) far outway the commute.

wi-fowler, I grew up in Wisconsin, hunting the Wisconsin river backwater and marsh areas for ducks, and Horicon for geese.
I do a similiar set up, without the shells for the most part. If I use the shells early, I put them on motion stakes. Actually we did a few hunts this year where almost ALL the decoys were on motion stakes. The results were hard to imagine. I only iwh I had a video camera when they started walking and weaving through the decoys as we scanned for leg bands!

Wi-Waterfowler,
The name Active comes from the goose that is on the ground that is actively walking around looking for food. The heads aren't as high as a sentry would be, because this goose is relaxed and hunting for food. We never intended the Actives to be sentry style decoy, that's where the Lookers come in.

I think the Active is an excellent choice for the name of these birds. I watched a field today of about 300 Canada geese. Approximately 50% were feeding and 50% were upright heads. Of the upright heads, about 10% of them were the true Looker type head. The rest of the uprights were walking around with the other geese looking for food. You could tell that when they found food, they would immediately stop and become a feeder. The Lookers were very stationary and didn't move very much.
Just what I observed,
