Journal Notes: This hunt began for me at the very early hour of 2:00 Sunday morning. I had hunted the previous morning in my home area of the province with this same crew from Wisconsin. After our post goose hunt breakfast they headed up to the area of the province they always spend their annual week-long waterfowl adventure. They arrived in the late afternoon and immediately started scouting for a shoot.

When they called me around 8:00 they told me they found a swathed barley field holding a large number of Mallards. As much as I was dying to sleep in – hearing that quickly changed my mind.

With a fresh thermos of coffee in hand I hit the highway. Visions of big greenheads cupped up diving into the spread made the drive much shorter than it was. I met the boys at their motel and then we had to head another 30 miles to the north to the field.

I’m not sure I can recall ever having being on a duck hunt that seemed this tough. The birds came in from very high and circled dozens of times. It was easy to tell the birds had been hunted hard the past few months. My best guess is the birds had been in this same area for quite some time and were not new birds to the area.

By mornings end we ended up being few short of a 4 man limit. It always nice meeting up with friends from the US that share the same passion and I definitely look forward to it each year.

Very nice. I'm gonna have to make a trip up there within the next couple years.
