JOURNAL NOTES:

Hunting harvested bean fields can be challenging, with not much cover to speak of getting the blinds concealed can be fun. On this hunt we had about three hundred honkers visiting the field on a daily basis, so we knew we were on the X. Our plan was to try to get in and get a quick morning hunt and with the two bird Michigan goose limit, we hoped this would not be a problem. This hunt we chose to use Avery® Power Hunter blinds and we removed the center bars to create an even lower profile. The morning of the hunt we woke to a light drizzle with not much wind. The decoy setup we chose allowed for plenty of room for the honkers to make their approach and landing and as we put the finishing touches on our hide we could here geese in the air. The first four pack came across the adjacent field right off the deck and with cupped wings at eighty yards, I knew we were in the right spot. Feet down at twenty yards told me the Power Hunters did the job, four geese in the bag.

We needed two more birds and as the next flock approached from the roost we coached Dewayne on how this should unfold. This was DeWayne’s first goose hunt and I could already see the bug setting in. The next flock that came over circled to our left and looked like they might land on the side of us, so we called the shot on the next pass. After the dust settled we could see more flocks getting up to come and feed. We needed to get our gear picked up and get out of the field, so the rest of the birds could come and feed saving the field for another day. As we picked up geese were trying to get in all around us, so we made a fumbled dash for the truck and turned to see the birds dumping right in as if nothing had happened. That field has had a few more limits taken since then. Getting in and getting out gave us more hunting in the long run.

Low profile is a under statement. The geese were clue less to our presence. Great time was had by all.
