JOURNAL NOTES: One of the highlights of my season was to fullfill a donated hunt to a cause called HDC ( Hunting Down Cancer) which was put together by a fellow Avery Pro-Staffer, Doug Steinke who asked for help and many of the Avery crew stepped up to the plate to help this worthy cause. I donated a 3 day 1 person hunt here on the Colorado River that netted $1125.00 for the cause with all the monies going to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. We will all be touched by cancer at some time in our lives wether it be family or friend. My Mom is a breast cancer survivor and that was more than enough to get me on board this worthy cause.

My guest just happened to be a LA County Fire, BC and we had absolutely nothing in common (joke). The hunting was not the best but I was able to get him 17 ducks and 2 geese in the 3 days he was here and we had a ball laughing and talking about hunting and life in general. Our season had been pretty slow but we had some new birds arrive before my guest got here to Yuma. Our first day was rather slow with some nice Wigeon and a pair of beautiful Redhead drakes. Our second day was even slower with most of the day searching for ducks. We finally found them but they were Shovelers and not what we were looking for although the numbers were in the hundreds. We stayed for a few hours in hope that some wigeon or divers would show but, it never happened. We did finally decide on taking a pair of drake shovelers and then headed down river for a possible evening shot at some honkers. Well, it must have been my lucky day because as I had mentioned to my hunter that the birds could possibly slide over the tules and drop into the hole that we were in, they did just that! He was able to put down two huge desert honkers. We also got a few more ducks before sunset. Our last day we spent having a great shoot on Widgeon and Redheads. He also got to see 5 Desert Bighorn Sheep out feeding and watering while we were in the duckblind which he thought was pretty cool! But this is the wild wild west and stuff just happens here! I hope to help out again with the HDC Hunts this year and hope to give my hunter a quality hunt with lots of beautiful country to see and hunt.
