JOURNAL NOTES: It always makes a person feel good when something is contributed for a good cause. For the second year running, I have been fortunate enough to donate a hunt to the Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer research. This year, my Hunting Down Cancer (HDC) hunt was bought by Jim Hawk as he was accompanied by Scott Doll and Leon Zeitner. Although the 2007-2008 seasons have been far below average in terms of bird numbers in my area, we were able to have a good season as well as two days worth of great hunting for the HDC.

With the help of Avery ® Pro-Staffer Ben Fujan, we scouted fields across a range of 30,000 acres and 70 miles to find the best “X.” With two fields holding 3-4,000 honkers for several days, we knew that our hunts should be good. Our only issue was the changing weather; a southeast wind at 20-30 mph and 30 degrees the first day to a northwest wind at 25-45 mph and sub-zero wind chills the second day. Varying weather conditions made for varying flight times as well as aggravation with holding the decoys to the ground. Day 1 turned out to be a late afternoon “Boil Out” flight and we were done in 20 minutes while decoying two flocks over 200 honkers. Fortunately, Day 2 was a mid morning flight that was perfectly spaced for about a half hour until we had our honkers. Both days the birds decoyed beautifully as no shots were taken over 20 yards. It was a fun time with the group. Below I have attached some photos to view.

Thanks again to Jim Hawk for contributing to the HDC Hunt as well as the landowners that gave us the hunting access. Hopefully next year we all can contribute again!
