Journal Notes:
Once again the northeastern zone in New York was set to open and we were ready for it. Plans had been laid out weeks before and all that was left was the long drive from PA to Bard’s house, and then we were north bound. After arriving very early, we set the decoys and laid back with a four hour wait ahead of us. A little sleep, a lot of “BS”, and a little bit of blind cooking kept us occupied until legal shooting time. As we got set and watched the time, the anticipation amongst the group was clearly building after seeing a fair number of ducks in the spot on our previous scouting mission.

As LST passed, we picked our way through some singles and pairs that had decoyed in just right. A few groups of other hunters around us kept the birds moving, but their shooting almost 15 minutes before legal time seemed to really clean the birds out of the area much sooner than we had hoped for. Throughout the morning, birds worked our large spread and a small spread we had set to the right for a few guys to hunt. After the guys on the right, Erik and Mike, downed a drake Mallard, my phone began to vibrate. When I picked it up, an overly excited Mike was on the other line. He proceeded to tell me they had shot a double banded drake Mallard, sporting not one, but two federal bands. Not a believer, I had to go down and investigate. Sure enough, two federal bands of different sequence and interestingly enough type of metal, were hanging on his orange legs. Mike and Erik had doubled up on this bird and it was very easily to see as the bird was crushed, including the iron attached to his legs. They were both giddy about the bird and decided to split the bands, seeing as it was almost simultaneous shooting that had brought him down. At the end of the morning, we had 11 birds in the bag, a little less than we had expected, but still a nice hunt with plenty of time left for the evening.

Morning Hunt...

Double Banded Drake...

A little bit of fun...

After packing up and heading in, we regrouped at the motel and headed out for an afternoon hunt. We located a little cut and cove that looked like a great spot. As we walked the boat back through the wild grass and mud, it quickly became apparent this was the spot. Teal kept trying to get in along with mallards and blacks, so we made short work of putting out a small spread and getting hidden in the cattails. Teal and mallards kept working the decoys and throughout the couple hours left before dark we were constantly busy shooting and working the passing birds. We didn’t quite finish out our limit for the day, but we were close enough to call it good as the sun set behind us…

Evening Hunt...

Nice work on the ducks fellas. Congrats to Mike and Eric on the bands. Bard's got some serious band mojo going. Your more likely to get struck by lightning than shoot a bird banded like that.
