JOURNAL NOTES:

After working hard all week and re-telling all of the stories we had made from the last weekend, it was time to get ready to make some new ones. The plan was to hunt from the same blind we had hunted one week prior, in the Southeastern Zone of New York. We had had some decent cold weather during the week and Arliss, Rob, and I were hoping that the weather had pushed some new birds into our area.

It was a cold and frosty Saturday morning and some gloves would have been handy for the 30 minute paddle out to our blind. With not very much time to dilly-dally, everyone went to work setting out the spread of various GHG® duck decoys, re-brushing the blind with grass, and sinking the canoes, so they would be out of sight. It was tough to concentrate on the task at hand that morning as hen mallards and blacks were beginning to get vocal all around us in the flooded brush.

As soon as legal shooting time arrived, we got to see what we were in for, good numbers of mallards and blacks began leaving the lake to go feed in other swamps and local fields. We had some pretty good shooting right off the bat, decoying a few smaller flocks of mallards right into our hole. A couple wiley black ducks found their way onto the Game Hog® Strap after they finally committed to the spread, having first swung around us five times. We rounded out the day with a few more pairs of mallards and decided to call it a day around noon.

Good stuff boys! I love those Blacks.

Arliss,
Shappell told me the bad news about the lanyard, more importantly the bands. Sorry to hear about that.
