Default Some guys have all the luck

Date: November 7th, 2008

Location: New York

Sunrise/ Sunset: 6:42 / 5:16

Weather: Overcast, scattered rain

Temperature: 40’s

Wind: Calm

Equipment Used: Avery® Power Hunter Blinds, GHG® FFD Lesser Actives, GHG ® L/S Canada Floaters, Avery® Floating Gun Case, Avery® 6 Slot Decoy Bags, Avery® Pro-grade Blind Bag, Avery® DIY Lanyard, Avery® Power Flag, Avery® Field Caps, Avery® Fleece Skull Caps.

Hunters: Arliss Reed, Robert Vellucci, Andy Steiner, Avery® Pro-staffer Ron Zega

Journal Notes:
After hunting hard all week long on “vacation”, Arliss, Rob and I were looking for a “easy” hunt to end the week. You know… one of those hunts that you can sleep in a little bit, not kill yourself trying to get to the spot, but would still be very productive bird-wise. We ended up deciding to hunt a “day-roost” pond that had had about 300-400 Canada geese loafing on it all week long. Andy was able to check out the spot for us the day before and confirmed that the geese were still frequenting the day roost.

We all met at the pond about 30 minutes after sunrise and hauled our decoys and blinds out to the grassy island in the middle of the pond. It didn’t take us long to throw out a dozen GHG ® L/S Canada Floaters and get the Avery® Power Hunter blinds grassed up to match the rest of the shoreline. Everyone was trying to guess when the first birds would come back from the fields, as we could hear them getting aggressive in a chopped cornfield just down the road. But before we could all make our predictions, the lids of the power hunters all flipped shut at the same time, when we heard the unmistakable sound of geese getting up and flying out of the field they had been feeding in.

The first flock worked in great; almost perfect… they slid off and ended up landing on the left side of the spread, only presenting Andy and myself with good shooting. We teamed up to shoot 5 out of the flock and I ended up claiming 3 of them...my limit for the day. The next flock came in perfectly again… centered up and tried to land about 15 yards out. Rob and Arliss each doubled and Andy shot one out of the flock, finishing his limit. We had one goose sail off and crash a few hundred yards out in the pasture. As Arliss brought the birds back, he held up Andy’s bird behind his back, showing everyone except Andy that it had a BAND!! Needless to say, Andy was pretty excited about it and went rushing out into the pasture to retrieve the “sailer,” which happened to be Arliss’ bird from the second flock. Like bands of a feather, they flocked together, and sure enough, that bird was banded too!!! We hunted for a little while longer and then decided to call it a success and pack up for the day.

L-R: Andy, Rob, Ron, Arliss

Any day you kill geese is good day but a band always makes it better.
