Date: 1/10/2009
Location: Western PA Sunrise: 7:43 EST Weather: Over cast, Wintery conditions, Snow accumulation to 10” Temperature: 26* F Wind: 7 mph East Equipment Used: GHG® Hot Buy Mallard Decoys, Avery® Fleece Callers Gloves, Avery® DIY Lanyard, Avery® Power Hunter Gun Sling, Avery® Swamp Seat, Avery® Finisher Blind Bag, Avery® Fleece Turtlehead, and Avery® Game Hog Strap. Hunters: Avery® Pro-Staffer David Rearick and Avery® Pro-Staffer Erik Nilsson Dogs: “Gauge” Journal Notes: Wintery Conditions blanketed our area with a heavy snow starting the night before. We had spent the prior days scouting for geese and we were starting to come up short on birds. With the heavy snow coming, we felt that it would be very difficult to hunt geese, let alone keeping the decoys clean. Dave and I opted to go back to the spot we previously hunted for another mallard hunt. Dave and I met and headed out as the snow really started coming down, on some roads driving was tricky because the snow was coming down so fast, it made it difficult to see. Arriving at our destination, we quickly unloaded everything and made our way back to where we sat before. The set up was quick again and it was snowing a lot. Shortly after LST, we could hear the mallards coming just like they did before. It was one of those hunts where you could hear them, but not see them because of the heavy snow. Gauge, now covered in snow, focused on the birds as they approached. We had a flock swing just outside of the spread and land just upstream. We clapped them out before any other birds showed and quickly relocated to give ourselves a better window of shooting opportunity. By now, the snow was coming down so fast that you had to be careful if you set anything down for it would disappear in no time. After a short wait, the birds started to trickle back. Dave and I began to work the birds on the calls, but little calling was needed because they wanted be there. We had singles and pairs lock up and spiral down to the decoys. Taking turns again, we quickly finished out for the day while Gauge made fast on retrieving our birds for us. We finished up with a nice strap full and about 10 inches of snow. This hunt ended my 2008-2009 Duck Season in PA. A great year, full of fun and fantastic memories shared. Hero Shot ![]() Last edited by Mike Bard; 02-05-2009 at 09:28 AM.. |

I can't say it enough, There is nothing like watching birds cut through the snow coming to the call and decoys. Nice job Guy's.
