Hunters: Arliss Reed, and Avery® Pro-Staffer Ron Zega Journal Notes: After taking a few weekends off from waterfowl hunting, we found ourselves back on the “Goose Chase” again in late February. Arliss and myself had planned a few scouting trips in anticipation for the March Canada Goose season here in New York. This is the second year that New York has had a 10 day season for Canada’s in the beginning of March, this season is specifically designed to reduce the population of “Resident” birds before the nesting season. With a good number of birds in the area, we planned some hunts; things looked especially good for the second day of the season. We left the house around 2:30 am and drove 1.5 hours to the field. Our setup was quick and the blinds blended in great in the picked cornfield. From our field, we could hear the geese sitting on the roost, which only added to our anticipation for that first flock. The geese didn’t decide to fly until a few hours after sunrise, right as it started snowing. There is something that I just love about watching Canada geese totally commit to a decoy spread, while the snow is falling. It didn’t take the two of us long after the honkers began flying to collect 5 Canada geese apiece, and even a bonus snow goose! The bitter cold didn’t keep us out in the field for too much longer; we took a few photos, packed up the decoys, and headed out to do some more scouting for the next weekend. ![]() ![]() ![]()
