Journal Notes:

Being that this was going to be our last opportunity to hunt Canada geese for the next 6 months, Arliss and myself were bound and determined to make it a good weekend. Unfortunately, due to the warm weather, intense hunting pressure, and south winds, we had been feeling all week, there were dramatically less birds still in the area that we were planning on hunting. Not letting that dampen our spirits any, Arliss picked out a muddy chopped cornfield that was holding about 60 birds, while I was loading up the truck with decoys and blinds.

When the alarm went off at 2:30 am it felt like I had hardly slept at all, but we made the 90 minute drive to the field, and walked all the decoys and blinds 700 yards out into the field. We set out a small, very natural looking decoy spread, and spent a lot of time brushing up the blinds. Not long after sunrise, we could hear the geese getting up off the roost, and being that we had very few birds on the way to our field, Arliss decided to do some aggressive flagging at the distant flocks, which ended up working like a charm. We finished 4 flocks that morning in no time at all and I was lucky enough to shoot a band out of one of them. Despite the extra 100 lbs of geese, we made it out of the field just in time to miss the rainstorms predicted for the rest of the day.

I'd like to see Arliss' aggressive flagging. Maybe he should use it on the ladies.

nice hunt and looks like the scouting paid off again. Hope you didn't have to repeat the 700 yd trip too many times on the way out!

What the hell!!! We have no early season, no late season, have to draw a tag for deer, elk, goats, sheep, and turkey. Might need to venture out of my circle. Nice work!!
