Default Greater Snow Goose Shootout

Date: March 21st, 2009

Location: New York

Sunrise/ Sunset: 6:38 / 7:27

Weather: Warm and sunny

Temperature: 25 - 48

Wind: 7-9 from the South

Equipment Used: Avery® Power Hunter Blinds, GHG® Ground Force Blind, Avery® Finisher Blind, GHG® T&T Snow Goose Shells, Avery® Floating Gun Case, Avery® 6 Slot Decoy Bags, Avery® Guide Bag, Avery® DIY Lanyard, Avery® Power Flag, Avery® Field Caps, and Avery® Fleece Skull Caps.

Hunters: Rick Murphy, Frank Clifton, Arliss Reed, Tim Reed, Matthew Shawl, Tim Shawl, Bryce Akin and Avery® Pro-Staffer Ron Zega

Journal Notes:

The weather forecast had all of us excited about today’s hunt; light south-southwest winds, warm and sunny. We were still riding high from our previous day’s hunt, and had made plans with a few other friends to bulk up the spread, hunt all day, and see what we could get. That is exactly what we did. With 8 blinds to brush up, and a ton of GHG® T&T Snow Goose Shells to put out, we started early, and were just about ready by daybreak.

Not really knowing what the day was going to bring, the first flock that gave us a look, even though they were a little on the far side, we decided to “take em” and managed to knock a few down starting the pile for the day. Turns out that we should have waited because the rest of the day, we could hardly keep them out of the decoys. Flocks ranging in size from singles to hundreds consistently decoyed to within 30 yards throughout the day, and before long, and with a lot of retrieving from Murphy’s black lab “Coot” as well as the hunters, we had a nice bag of snow geese accumulating on the ground behind the blinds. The birds quit flying around 4:30 and it gave us plenty of time to talk about the days hunt, collect all the dead birds, and set up and take a nice photo. We ended up with 54 snows that day, all Greater Snows, and a lot of memories none of us will soon forget.
